Chapter 10 - Awakening and Reckoning

Three days later, the discharge papers were signed, and the Moretti family finally returned home.

The house had been completely restored. While Vincent and Emily were at the hospital, Sal and his men had deep-cleaned every room, replaced the damaged furniture, upgraded the security perimeter with state-of-the-art biometric sensors and armored windows, and ensured that not a single trace of Arthur and Martha’s chaotic presence remained.

As Vincent carried little Noah through the front door, cradling the baby securely against his chest, Emily walked beside him, holding his arm.

"It feels like a brand-new house," Emily whispered, looking around the bright, sunlit living room.

"It is a brand-new house," Vincent replied, smiling down at her. "From this moment on, nothing and no one will ever breach these doors again."

That evening, after putting Noah to sleep in his newly reinforced nursery, Vincent stood out on the back patio overlooking the sprawling suburban lawn. The autumn breeze rustled through the oak trees, carrying the crisp scent of falling leaves.

His satellite phone buzzed in his pocket.

Vincent pulled it out and answered.

"Boss," Sal’s voice came through the secure line. "The federal prosecutors just locked in the final plea deals for the remaining Cincinnati capos. They're looking at twenty years to life without parole. The Midwest territory is completely ours, uncontested."

"Good," Vincent replied calmly. "Keep the perimeter guards doubled for the next month. I don't want any surprises."

"Will do, Boss. By the way... are you officially coming back to the downtown office on Monday, or are you staying retired?"

Vincent looked back through the sliding glass door into the warmly lit living room, where Emily was sitting on the sofa, smiling as she looked through a photo album of their newborn son.

"I'm never retiring, Sal," Vincent said softly. "An emperor doesn't retire. He just makes sure his kingdom is secure."

He hung up the phone, slipped it back into his pocket, and walked back inside to join his family.

The quiet chauffeur was gone forever. In his place stood Vincent Moretti—husband, father, and absolute king of the shadows. And as long as he drew breath, his family would never walk in fear again.
