Chapter 8 - The Family Trap

Two days later, the fallout from the federal raids made front-page news across every major newspaper and television network in the Midwest.

MASSIVE SYNDICATE TAKEDOWN: FEDERAL AND STATE RAIDS CRUSH ORGANIZED CRIME RING ACROSS OHIO.

Sitting in the private VIP lounge of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, Vincent watched the morning news broadcast on the wall-mounted flat-screen television while sipping his coffee. The anchor was breathlessly reporting on the simultaneous arrests of dozens of high-ranking syndicate figures, the seizure of millions of dollars in illegal assets, and the downfall of local white-collar collaborators who had used front companies to launder drug money through real estate.

The name "Moretti" was never mentioned on the news. In the eyes of the public and the federal prosecutors, Vincent Moretti remained what he had always pretended to be: a quiet, unassuming corporate chauffeur who had suffered a tragic breach of trust by negligent relatives.

The door to the VIP lounge opened softly, and Salvatore walked in, holding a secure leather briefcase.

"Boss," Sal said quietly, closing the door behind him. "The cleanup is complete. The Cincinnati branch is entirely dismantled. All financial trails linking us to Arthur's debt have been permanently scrubbed. The federal task force believes the syndicate collapsed from an internal civil war."

Vincent didn't take his eyes off the television screen. "And Arthur and Martha?"

"They're halfway to Nevada on a Greyhound bus with one hundred dollars in their pockets," Sal grinned, adjusting his tie. "They got dropped off in the middle of the Mojave Desert just like you ordered. Word in the underworld is already spreading: if you touch Vincent Moretti's family, you don't just go to prison—you disappear from the face of the earth."

"Good," Vincent said coldly. "Keep an eye on them anyway. If either of them tries to contact Emily, make sure they regret it."

"Consider it handled, Boss. By the way... there's one more thing." Sal set the leather briefcase down on the coffee table and popped the latches.

Inside lay a heavy, ornate silver signet ring resting on a velvet cushion—the crest of the late Don Salvatore Moretti Sr., the legendary Chicago kingpin who had carved out the Midwest empire before passing the mantle down to Vincent years ago.

Vincent looked down at the ring. He hadn't worn it since the day he decided to step back from the daily throne room politics to live a quiet life in Ohio with Emily.

"Are you putting it back on?" Sal asked quietly, watching his boss with a mixture of respect and reverence.

Vincent reached out, his fingers hovering over the heavy silver band. For a long moment, he thought about the last seven days—the terror in Emily’s eyes when she was fighting for her life, the tiny, breathless cry of his newborn son in a neglected crib, and the terrifying vulnerability of believing he was just a regular man who couldn't protect his own home.

He had learned a hard truth: in the world he came from, you couldn't protect the light by hiding in the dark. You had to hold the sword yourself.

Vincent picked up the signet ring and slid it onto the third finger of his right hand. It fit with absolute, familiar perfection.

"No, Sal," Vincent said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "I'm not going back to Chicago. We're staying right here in Ohio."

Sal blinked, confused. "Here, Boss?"

"Yes," Vincent replied, a cold, powerful smile touching his lips. "Because an empire isn't defined by a city or a throne room. An empire is defined by the walls you build around the people you love. And from now on... Columbus belongs to the Morettis."
