Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary Breach

The small kitchen of the bungalow smelled of cinnamon and warm milk. Elena stood by the stove, stirring a pot of oatmeal while the morning news hummed quietly on a small television counter. In the living room, Leo and Lucas were currently engaged in a fierce battle involving wooden train tracks.
Suddenly, the television screen flickered, the signal breaking into static before returning. Outside, the usual morning bird song seemed to vanish, replaced by the heavy, synchronized thud of car doors closing on the quiet street.
Elena's instinct, honed by six months of living in the shadow of the Caruso syndicate, flared instantly. She dropped the wooden spoon, walking quickly toward the window.
A large, armored black Mercedes van was parked directly in front of her walkway. Two men in identical black suits stood at the edge of her driveway, their eyes scanning the treeline.
Before she could lock the front door, the handle turned. The lock clicked open with a smooth, professional override.
Elena ran into the living room, gathering Leo and Lucas into her arms, pulling them behind the heavy oak dining table. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Stay behind me, boys. Don't say a word."
The front door swung open.
Marcus Hale walked in first, his large frame filling the entryway. He looked around the room, his eyes softening slightly when he saw the twins peeking out from behind Elena’s legs. He stepped aside, holding the door wide.
The smooth, rhythmic hum of an electric wheelchair entered the house.
Dominic Caruso rolled into her living room. He looked smaller without the grand backdrop of his Chicago office or his fleet of SUVs, but the aura of pure power he radiated was completely intact. He stopped in the center of the hardwood floor, looking at the scattered wooden trains, and then at the defensive position Elena had taken.
"Get out of my house, Dominic," Elena spat, her voice trembling with rage. "You have no right to be here. I will call the police."
"The police won't help you with what's coming, Elena," Dominic said softly. His gaze drifted down to the twins. Lucas was staring at the wheelchair again, while Leo clung tightly to Elena's jeans. "Hi, Lucas. Hi, Leo."
"You remember my name!" Lucas cheered, trying to step out from behind his mother, but Elena held him back with a firm grip.
"Dominic, I swear to God—"
"Viktor Petrov knows you're in Milwaukee," Dominic interrupted, his voice dropping all pretense of gentleness. The cold reality of his words struck the room like a physical blow. "His men have been surveying this block for forty-eight hours. They don't know about the boys yet. They think it's just you. But if they find out those two have my eyes, they won't just use them for leverage. They will eliminate them to ensure the Caruso line ends with me."
Elena’s face went entirely bloodless. She looked at Marcus, who gave her a grim, respectful nod of confirmation. She knew the name Petrov. She had seen the red-inked ledgers of the Bratva's human trafficking and extortion rings when she was auditing Dominic’s companies. She knew exactly what kind of monsters they were.
"No," Elena whispered, her strength suddenly evaporating. She sank to her knees, her hands shaking as she pulled her sons close to her chest. "No, no, no... I hid them. I did everything right. I changed my name, I moved states..."
Dominic watched her break, and the pain in his chest was worse than the bullet in his spine. He wanted to stand up. For the first time in three years, he hated his dead legs with a violent, burning passion. He wanted to walk across the room, kneel beside her, and wrap his arms around his family.
Instead, he rolled his chair forward until he was right in front of them. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently lifting Elena’s chin so she had to look into his silver-gray eyes.
"You did perfectly, Elena," he murmured, his voice thick with a raw, authentic emotion he had never shown another human being. "You protected them from my world for three years. But the world found you anyway. Now, it's my turn to protect you. Come back to Chicago. I have a fortified estate in Lake Forest. No one can touch you there. No one can touch our sons."
Elena looked into his eyes, searching for the ruthless crime boss who had thrown her out of a hospital room. Instead, she only saw a terrified father begging for the safety of his children.
She looked at Leo and Lucas, then back at Dominic.
May you like
"Only for their safety," she whispered, her voice defeated. "But we are not your family, Dominic. You chose your empire over us three years ago."
Dominic pulled his hand back, his expression hardening back into stone. "My empire is exactly what will keep them alive. Pack their things. We leave in ten minutes."
