Chapter 5 - Blood and Silver

The universe seemed to contract, collapsing inward until there was nothing left in the world except for the humming fluorescent lights, the smell of dust and baby powder, and the devastating truth echoing off the concrete walls.

Younger brother.

I stared into Victor Vance’s face, my mind violently rejecting the words, scrambling to find logic where there was only madness.

"That's... that's impossible," I whispered, shaking my head so hard my hair whipped across my face. "Mark was an orphan. He told me his parents died in a car crash when he was a teenager. He lived a normal life, a quiet life. He worked behind a computer screen. He didn't have anything to do with... with your world. With the mafia, with crime syndicates, with monsters!"

"He changed his name, Clara," Victor said, his voice dropping into a ragged, agonized whisper as his hands fell slowly away from my face. He slumped back against the filing cabinet, staring down at his polished shoes as if he couldn't bear to look at me anymore. "After our father died and the syndicate wars tore our family apart, Mark refused to inherit the crown. He walked away. He cut all ties to protect himself, to live a clean life. He wanted a wife, a home, a daughter. He wanted a future I could never have."

Victor looked up, his dark obsidian eyes shining with an unbearable weight of guilt and sorrow.

"I watched over him from a distance," Victor continued, his voice cracking. "Every month, I ensured his bank accounts were bolstered through anonymous shell companies so you both would never have to worry about rent or groceries. I kept my enemies away from his doorstep. But six months ago... a rival faction within the board discovered who he was. They thought getting to Mark would break me. They ambushed him on his way back from the grocery store. His car was torched, and his body was dumped into the bay before my recovery teams could reach him."

A suffocating wave of nausea rolled over me. The room tilted violently, and I had to throw out a hand to steady myself against the edge of the metal desk.

Six months ago. The exact time Mark vanished. The exact time the anonymous direct deposits into our joint savings account had mysteriously stopped, plunging us into the spiral of debt, eviction notices, and despair that led me to smuggle my baby into this subterranean hell.

"You knew," I choked out, a sudden, blinding rage eclipsing the grief in my chest. I lunged forward, slamming both fists against Victor Vance’s expensive silk-clad chest, pummeling him with all the fury of a shattered life. "You knew who killed him? You’re the most powerful man in the city! You own the docks, the police, the judges! Why didn't you protect him? Why didn't you save him?!"

Victor didn't flinch. He didn't raise a hand to stop me. He sat there and took every blow, letting my fists batter against his chest until my strength gave out entirely and I collapsed forward, burying my face in my hands, sobbing hysterically as the full, crushing weight of my widowhood crashed down upon me.

A pair of strong, steady arms wrapped around my shoulders, lifting me gently and pulling me against a hard, unyielding chest.

For the first time since Mark disappeared, I didn't push away. I cried until my throat burned, clinging to the brother of the man I loved, mourning the ghost of a life we would never get back.

"I didn't save him in time, Clara," Victor whispered fiercely against my hair, his own voice thick with suppressed tears. "And I will never forgive myself for that. But I swear to you—on my life, on my blood, on my brother's memory—every single bastard who had a hand in Mark's murder is currently six feet under or running for their lives. And the last remaining mastermind..."

Victor pulled back, holding me by the shoulders. His dark eyes burned with a cold, terrifying promise of absolute retribution.

"...the rat inside my own corporate board who leaked Mark's location? I’ve been hunting him for six months. And today... thanks to a brave little girl who decided to crawl into my office disguised as a squeaking rubber duck... I finally have the missing piece of the ledger."

He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive—the very drive Mark had hidden inside the lining of the silver signet ring before he died, a drive containing the financial routing numbers and encrypted communications linking the traitorous board member directly to the hit squad.

I looked down at Ellie. She had finally grown tired of the emotional storm around her, resting her head against my shoulder, her thumb tucked securely in her mouth as she drifted off into peaceful sleep.

Victor reached out, his calloused finger gently brushing a stray curl away from my cheek.

"You and Ellie are never going back to that subterranean apartment, Clara," he said quietly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "You are coming upstairs. To the penthouse. Where you belong. Where my brother's bloodline will be protected by an army if necessary."

I looked into the eyes of the most feared mafia boss in the city—a man who was now my brother-in-law, my protector, and the architect of my family's survival.

The fear was gone. In its place was a cold, quiet strength.

"Okay," I whispered.

Victor stood up, offering his hand to help me rise, and together, carrying my sleeping daughter against my chest, we stepped out of the shadows of the sub-basement and into the light.
