Chapter 4 - The Weight of Silver

The silence in the sub-basement archives grew so absolute that I could hear the rhythmic ticking of the wall clock three aisles over.

Victor Vance stared at the silver ring dangling from Ellie’s wrist as though he were looking face-to-face with an apparition rising from the dead. His breath came in shallow, ragged hitches, shattering the impenetrable, ice-cold facade that had made him the most feared man in the city. The terrifying mafia boss, the ruthless corporate tyrant who crushed his enemies without blinking, looked as though he had just been struck across the chest with a sledgehammer.

"Where..."

His voice was barely a rasp, stripped of all its baritone authority, sounding broken and hollowed out.

"Where did you get that?" he demanded, his dark eyes snapping up from Ellie’s wrist to lock onto my face with a terrifying, burning intensity. He didn't pull his finger away from her grip; instead, his other hand rose slowly, trembling violently as he hovered his fingertips inches from the silver signet ring, as if terrified that if he actually touched it, the metal would turn to ash and vanish.

My blood ran cold. A spike of pure, protective terror surged through my veins, overriding my fear of his power. I instinctively pulled Ellie back against my chest, shielding her with my arms, though she happily held onto his finger, letting out a soft, gurgling coo.

"Leave her alone!" I hissed, my voice shaking with a mother's fierce desperation. "That belongs to my husband. It's a family heirloom. Now back away—"

"Your husband," Victor repeated, the words tasting like poison on his tongue. His face twisted in a complex, agonizing mix of grief, disbelief, and incandescent fury. "What is your husband's name?"

"What business is that of yours?" I shot back, tears of frustration stinging my eyes. "Who are you to interrogate me? You have no right—"

"Answer the damn question, Clara!" he roared, the sudden explosion of sound echoing thunderously off the concrete walls of the vault.

It wasn't a threat; it was a plea wrapped in raw, bleeding desperation.

Before I could process his outburst, the heavy security door at the end of the corridor banged open again. Heavy, frantic footsteps echoed down the hall, and a second later, Kravitz burst into the records archive, huffing, his hand instinctively resting on his service weapon, accompanied by two armed tactical guards.

"Boss!" Kravitz panted, scanning the scene with wild eyes. "We saw on the security monitors that you entered the restricted sub-level unauthorized. Is there a security breach? Should we—?"

"GET OUT!"

Victor didn't even turn his head. He didn't look at Kravitz. He simply raised his left hand, his fingers still trapped in Ellie’s tiny fist, and barked a single word with enough venom to make the hardened veteran flinch.

"Boss, but—"

"IF YOU OR ANYONE ELSE STEPS ANOTHER FOOT INTO THIS CORRIDOR, I WILL PERSONALLY FEED YOU TO THE SHARKS IN THE HUDSON RIVER! GET OUT!"

Kravitz swallowed hard, his eyes darting from Victor’s terrifying expression to me kneeling on the floor with a baby in my arms. Without uttering another syllable, the security head grabbed his men by the shoulders, backed out of the room, and slammed the heavy fire door shut behind them, locking us back into absolute, suffocating isolation.

The heavy steel door clicked shut.

Victor slowly turned his head back toward me. The fury in his eyes had receded, leaving behind an ocean of dark, jagged pain.

"Your husband," he repeated softly, his voice trembling. "Did he have green eyes? A small scar across his left jawline from a childhood accident? Did he call himself Mark... or did he go by his real name?"

My breath hitched in my throat. The room spun wildly on its axis.

How could Victor Vance—a billionaire crime syndicate boss sitting atop a criminal empire—possibly know my husband’s physical description? My husband, Mark, who had worked as a quiet, unassuming freelance software consultant before he walked out of our apartment one rainy Tuesday evening six months ago to pick up groceries and never returned?

"You... you knew him?" I whispered, the floor seemingly dissolving beneath my knees. "Mark? The police said he abandoned us. They said his car was found abandoned near the docks with his wallet inside, that he skipped town. But I knew—I knew he wouldn't leave us. You... what do you know about what happened to him?"

Victor closed his eyes. A single, heavy tear broke free from beneath his dark lashes, cutting a clean path down his pale cheek before dripping off his jawline onto the concrete floor.

He slowly knelt closer, finally gently prying his index finger out of Ellie’s grip. The baby whimpered in protest, but Victor ignored her, reaching out with both hands—not to hurt us, but to gently, reverently cup the side of my face with his warm, calloused palms.

"He didn't abandon you, Clara," Victor choked out, his voice breaking on a sob that seemed to tear its way up from the deepest, darkest chambers of his soul. "Mark didn't run away. He was my younger brother. And the men who killed him... are still walking free."
