Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

The ballroom erupted into chaos.
Guests gasped, whispered, and stood up from their chairs. Vanessa’s Connecticut socialite friends sat in stunned, horrified silence, while several prominent board members from Northstar Systems glared at Christian Vance with cold, predatory eyes.
Vanessa took two steps backward, her high heel catching on her long lace train. She stumbled, grabbing the edge of the rose arch to keep from falling, her veil tearing against the wooden frame.
"Ethan..." Vanessa whimpered, her polished persona completely shattering into jagged pieces. She held out her hands, tears—real tears of panic—streaming down her cheeks. "Ethan, please! It... it wasn't what it sounded like! Christian seduced me! He set up the offshore account structure! He manipulated me!"
"You lying snake!" Christian snarled, turning on Vanessa with vicious speed. "You came to my office six months ago asking how to break his prenuptial agreement! You offered me twenty percent of the marital trust!"
"Enough," Ethan said.
The single word cut through their argument like a guillotine.
Ethan walked slowly up the altar steps. He stood before Vanessa, looking down at her. For months, he had looked at her and seen a shelter from his isolation—a woman who remembered his coffee, his mother's memory, his childhood baseball glove.
Now, he saw the truth. She had researched his life like a target dossier.
"My mother told me something before she died," Ethan said softly, his voice echoing through the silent hall. "She said a man’s real wealth is the person who stays when there’s nothing left to take."
He took the two-million-dollar diamond ring from his pocket.
Without a second thought, Ethan tossed the ring into the center of Vanessa’s fallen bouquet of white lilies.
"You can keep the flowers, Vanessa," Ethan said, his tone flat and devoid of any emotion. "The wedding is canceled."

Ethan turned to the two security officers who were standing near the aisle. "Escort Ms. Hart and Mr. Vance off the property. Hand Christian's briefcase over to the fraud division of the NYPD—Marcus has already forwarded the audio files to the District Attorney."
Christian Vance collapsed into a seat, his head in his hands, as two guards stepped up to flank him. Vanessa began sobbing hysterically as her mother rushed up the aisle to drag her away from the cameras.
