Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm at Rosewood Manor

Eleven days later, the air inside Rosewood Manor smelled of crushed white gardenias, expensive perfume, and rain.

Outside, a late April drizzle tapped against the stained-glass windows of the grand ballroom, casting soft blue shadows across three hundred guests dressed in tuxedos and designer gowns. A famous string quartet played softly near the altar, the music weaving around a towering gazebo crafted from ten thousand white imported roses.

Vanessa stood beneath the floral arch, looking like an angel carved from porcelain. Her custom lace dress hugged her figure perfectly, its long train spilling over the red velvet carpet. She held a bouquet of white lilies, her lips parted in a practiced, radiant smile as she gazed up into Ethan’s eyes.

Standing beside Ethan as his best man was Christian Vance—a thirty-four-year-old corporate attorney with sleek, slicked-back hair and a smile that never reached his pale grey eyes. Christian was the lead legal advisor who had helped draft the prenuptial agreement.

And right now, Christian’s hand was resting calmly in his tuxedo pocket, carrying the pen Vanessa would use to sign the marital trust documents immediately after the vows.

Ethan held the ring.

It was an eight-carat, emerald-cut diamond set in platinum—a piece of jewelry worth two point four million dollars. As his thumb brushed against the cold metal, he looked at Vanessa’s face.

Her smile was flawless. Her eyes were bright.

Yet, deep within Ethan’s chest, an ancient alarm bell—the same instinct that had saved him when he was a broke kid in Dayton—was quietly ringing.

"Ethan," the minister whispered gently, nodding toward Vanessa’s left hand. "You may place the ring on your bride's finger."

Ethan lifted the band. He took a breath.

That was when the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open.

BANG!

A gasp rippled through the three hundred elite guests.

A tiny, barefoot girl burst through the entrance, her white dress wrinkled, one of her small patent-leather shoes missing, her dark curls coming undone around her tear-streaked face. She clutched a worn, grey stuffed rabbit tightly under her left arm.

Behind her, Maria Reyes came running through the doors, her face white with absolute horror. "Lily! No! Stop!"

But three-year-old Lily didn't stop.

She sprinted barefoot down the long center aisle, past senators, billionaires, movie stars, and venture capitalists, her tiny feet slapping against the velvet runner.

"Don't marry her!" Lily screamed, her little voice cutting through the solemn hall like a jagged blade.

The string quartet stopped in the middle of a note.

Vanessa’s smile froze so instantly it looked as if her face had turned to glass. Her knuckles went white around her bouquet.

Christian Vance stepped forward instantly, his eyes narrowing with sharp authority. "Security! Get that child out of here immediately!"

Two burly guards in dark suits moved in from the side aisles to grab the toddler.

"DON'T TOUCH HER!"

The command didn't come from Maria. It didn't come from the guards' supervisor.

It came from Ethan Cole.

His voice didn't sound like the quiet, polite billionaire the press wrote about. It carried the terrifying, crushing authority of a man who commanded four billion dollars of capital and four thousand employees.

The security guards froze dead in their tracks.

Ethan slowly lowered the two-million-dollar ring.

In front of three hundred of the most powerful people in North America, Ethan dropped to both knees on the velvet carpet, ignoring the rain-damp dirt near his trousers. He met Lily at the base of the altar steps, catching her as she stumbled toward him.

Lily threw her small arms around Ethan’s neck, sobbing into his lapel. "Please, Mr. Ethan... please don't! She’s going to make you cry!"

A collective gasp echoed across the grand hall.

May you like

Ethan pulled back slightly, wiping a tear from the girl's soft cheek with his thumb. His heart pounded against his ribs, but his eyes were completely focused.

"Why do you think that, Lily?" Ethan asked softly.
