Chapter 3 - The Secret Ledger

Back at Willow Creek Ranch, the atmosphere inside the main study was as cold as the winter landscape outside.
Daniel Whitmore sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring at a stack of financial audits covering the past three years.
The door opened without a knock. Victor Hale stepped inside, carrying a silver tray with a cup of black coffee and a fresh set of security reports.
“Morning, Daniel,” Victor said smoothly, placing the tray on the edge of the desk. “I’ve spoken with the sheriff’s department regarding the Carter girl. They’re drafting a warrant for breaking and entering, grand larceny for the ruby pendant, and child endangerment. We can have her picked up by noon.”
Daniel didn't look up from the financial printouts. He turned a page slowly, his eyes scanning a series of wire transfer receipts routed through a holding company in the Cayman Islands.
“You’re very efficient, Victor,” Daniel said quietly.
“I look out for the family’s interests,” Victor replied, adjusting his cuffs with practiced grace. “Always have. Ever since your father hired me. You have enough on your plate raising those three little girls without having local vagrants breaking into the nursery.”
Daniel finally raised his head. His slate-gray eyes fixed on Victor with an unnerving stillness.
“You mentioned that the security logs proved Emma accessed the main administrative terminal at 2:15 a.m.,” Daniel said.
“That’s correct, sir. The system IP address matches her temporary guest login from last week when she delivered food to the staff lounge.”
“Strange,” Daniel murmured, sliding a different document across the desk. “I had our outside cybersecurity consultant from Louisville run a deep forensic packet analysis on the server this morning. Do you know what he found, Victor?”
Victor’s face remained composed, but a tiny bead of sweat formed near his left temple. “I wouldn't know about technical packet analysis, Daniel. That’s outside my department.”
“It turns out the command to disable the nursery heater and cut the camera feeds didn't come from a guest login,” Daniel continued, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. “It came from the master terminal located inside the ranch manager’s private residence.”
The silence in the study became absolute.
Victor took a half-step back, his smooth exterior cracking slightly. “That’s... that’s impossible. Someone must have spoofed my IP address. You know me, Daniel. I’ve dedicated my life to this ranch. I was like a brother to Claire.”
“Don't mention my wife’s name,” Daniel said, standing up so abruptly his leather chair rolled back and hit the wall with a loud crash.
Around the room, the temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. Daniel rounded the desk, towering over Victor.
“Claire suspected you, didn't she?” Daniel demanded, his voice shaking with suppressed rage. “Three days before she died, she accessed these exact financial ledgers. She found out you were systematically looting the shipping subsidiaries, didn't she?”
“That’s insane!” Victor shouted, dropping his professional facade entirely. “You’re listening to a hysterical diner waitress over a man who has served you loyally for twelve years!”
“I’m listening to evidence,” Daniel said, his hand closing into a tight fist. “And right now, every piece of evidence points to the fact that you engineered the nursery failure last night to terrorize my daughters—and planted that ruby pendant in the hallway to frame an innocent girl.”
Victor’s eyes darted toward the heavy mahogany doors. He realized the game was up. The smooth, calm veneer melted away, revealing the desperate, cornered criminal underneath.

With a sudden, violent movement, Victor reached inside his jacket, pulling out a heavy steel-barreled snub-nosed revolver.
“I guess we’re doing this the hard way, boss,” Victor hissed, leveling the gun directly at Daniel’s chest.
