Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

At 9:00 AM the following morning, the grand boardroom of Cole Real Estate Holdings was packed with board members, legal representatives, and news reporters.
Victor Vance stood at the head of the mahogany table wearing a sharp charcoal suit, flanked by three corporate attorneys from the Marcone Group. He looked confident, holding a thick leather folder.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Victor announced smoothly to the room. "Nathan Cole has abandoned his fiduciary duties. Over the last three days, he has unilaterally canceled a forty-million-dollar transaction, transferred company real estate into private trusts, and used corporate assets to fund private medical care for unvetted individuals. He is letting personal sentiment ruin this firm!"
The board members whispered among themselves, looking uneasy.
Right on cue, the double mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open.
Nathan Cole walked in.
He wasn't wearing his usual cold, distant executive demeanor. He wore a simple navy suit, and his face was calm, relaxed, and brimming with undeniable power. Walking beside him was the District Attorney for the State of New York, accompanied by two armed investigators.
Victor’s confident smile faltered. "Nathan... what is the meaning of this?"
Nathan walked to the head of the table, resting his hands on the back of the executive chair.
"Victor," Nathan began smoothly. "Eighteen months ago, you opened an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Vance Development LLC.' You received three point five million dollars in wire transfers from the Marcone Group in exchange for sabotaging municipal heating grids in five of my residential properties."
The room gasped.
"That's a lie! That's slander!" Victor shouted, his face turning bright red.
The District Attorney stepped forward, tossing a thick stack of bank records and signed affidavits onto the table. "We have the bank trails, Mr. Vance. We also have recorded phone calls between you and the Marcone Group’s acquisitions director discussing how to force low-income families onto the streets before winter."
Victor stumbled back against the window frame, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The Marcone Group’s attorneys immediately gathered their briefcases, stepping away from Victor as if he were radioactive.
"You thought those tenants were powerless, Victor," Nathan said, his voice echoing through the silent boardroom with absolute authority. "You thought because they were poor, because they were struggling, nobody would ever fight for them. You were wrong."
Nathan turned to the board of directors.
"As majority shareholder, I am officially terminating Victor Vance for gross misconduct and felony fraud," Nathan announced. "Furthermore, Cole Real Estate is launching a fifty-million-dollar restoration initiative. Every low-income building in our portfolio will be completely renovated, heat systems upgraded, and rents capped permanently."
