Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Fifteen Years

"Sarah?"
The name left Nathan’s lips like a shattered prayer.
The woman on the mattress stirred weakly. Her eyes opened slowly, clouded with fever and exhaustion. She blinked several times, trying to focus on the tall silhouette standing in the doorway of her bedroom.
"Nathan...?" she whispered, her voice barely a dry rasp. "No... I’m... I must be dreaming..."
Nathan dropped to his knees beside the bed, completely unmindful of the dust and the stained carpet. His hands trembled as he reached out, gently cupping her hollow cheek. The warmth of her fever radiated against his palm.
"It’s me, Sarah," Nathan choked out, tears stinging his eyes for the first time in over a decade. "It’s really me. My God... what happened to you? Why are you living like this?!"
Sarah turned her face away slightly, trying to hide her gaunt appearance, tears leaking from the corners of her closed eyes. "You... you weren't supposed to find us, Nathan. I worked so hard... so hard to make sure you never saw me like this..."
"Why didn't you call me?!" Nathan demanded, his voice thick with emotion and rising frustration. "I spent five years looking for you after I left college! I searched every record, hired investigators—your family told me you moved to the West Coast and married someone else!"
Sarah let out a bitter, raspy laugh that quickly devolved into a violent coughing fit. Nathan immediately lifted her shoulders, holding the cup of water to her chapped lips until the coughing subsided.
"My family lied to you, Nathan," Sarah whispered, leaning weakly against his chest. "Your father... your father came to my apartment the week after you turned twenty-one. He told me that if I stayed in your life, he would strip you of your grandfather’s trust, destroy your reputation, and make sure you never got a foot in the real estate business."
Nathan’s blood ran cold. "My father...?"
"He gave me fifty thousand dollars to leave New York and sign a non-disclosure agreement," Sarah sobbed quietly. "I refused the money. But then... then he threatened my younger brother’s medical business. He promised to ruin my family. I had to protect you, Nathan. You had big dreams... you wanted to build an empire..."
"I didn't care about the empire!" Nathan roared softly, his hands gripping her shoulders. "I cared about you!"
"I was pregnant, Nathan," Sarah whispered.
The tiny bedroom went utterly, suffocatingly silent.
Outside the curtain, the faint, rhythmic sound of the hand-crank sewing machine began again as Lily went back to her work in the living room.
Nathan’s heart stopped beating. He stared at Sarah’s pale, tear-streaked face, the realization crashing over him like a tidal wave.
"Lily..." Nathan breathed, his voice shaking violently. "Lily is... she’s my daughter?"
Sarah nodded slowly, her chest heaving with weak breaths. "She was born seven years ago. I raised her alone... I worked three jobs until my lungs failed two years ago... systemic lupus and pulmonary fibrosis. The medical bills took everything we had. We were evicted from our last apartment... I brought us here because the rent was cheap..."
"Cheap?" Nathan laughed bitterly, tears running freely down his cheeks now. "Sarah, this building belongs to me. I owned the very roof that was leaking over your heads. I was the landlord who sent you eviction notices!"
Sarah reached out, her frail, thread-scarred hand touching his arm. "She sews... to buy my medicine, Nathan. Every night... she sits at that machine... making doll clothes for a shop down the street... ten cents a piece... because she thinks if she works hard enough, she can save her mommy..."
Nathan buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, uncontrollable sobs. He had spent fifteen years building a multi-million-dollar fortune, wearing bespoke suits, sitting in mahogany boardrooms, and judging the poor for "failing to handle basic things"—while his own child was bleeding from pinpricks to keep her dying mother alive in one of his own neglected slums.
He stood up abruptly, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand.

"Nathan... where are you going?" Sarah asked in alarm.
"I’m getting my family out of this hellhole," Nathan said with absolute, unyielding authority. "Right now."
