Chapter 1 - The Sovereign Inheritance

The photograph in the old man's hand trembled against the faint afternoon breeze. The woman in the picture was wearing a vintage 90s silk dress, her eyes a striking, clear hazel—the exact shade I saw every morning in the mirror.
"Her name was Evelyn," the man said, his voice thick with a lifetime of unshed tears. "She was my wife. And thirty-three years ago, she was taken from me in a targeted corporate extortion plot. They told me she died in labor. They told me our child didn't survive."
My hands clutched the handle of my suitcase so tightly my knuckles turned white. "Who... who are you?"
The driver's door opened, and the man stepped out. Despite his emotional state, he carried an undeniable aura of immense power and wealth. "My name is Arthur Sterling. I am the chairman of Sterling Global Enterprises. For three decades, I believed my bloodline ended with Evelyn's passing. But three months ago, a deathbed confession from a corrupt hospital administrator revealed the truth. My daughter was stolen. Placed in a closed adoption. Named Mariana."
He reached out, his fingers hovering just inches from my cheek, as if terrified I would vanish if he touched me. "I've been tracking you for weeks, Mariana. I wanted to come to your home, to introduce myself properly to you and your husband. But then I saw you walk out with that suitcase."
I looked back toward the sprawling Beverly Hills mansion—the house I had poured my heart into, the house where Ryan and his mother were currently celebrating my disposal.
A sudden, sharp wave of nausea hit me, and I instinctively placed a protective hand over my stomach. Arthur's sharp eyes caught the movement immediately. His gaze shifted from my hand to the raw, hollow look of betrayal in my eyes.
"What did he do to you?" Arthur asked, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register that made the hairs on my arms stand up.
"He divorced me," I whispered, a single tear escaping my eye. "He thinks I'm barren. He found a younger woman to give him the family I supposedly couldn't."

Arthur looked at my hand still resting on my stomach. The realization hit him like a physical blow. A fierce, predatory smile touched the lips of the billionaire.
"He thinks you walk away with nothing," Arthur murmured, opening the rear door of the luxurious SUV for me. "Get in, my darling. He didn't just throw out a wife. He threw out the sole heir to the Sterling empire. And he has absolutely no idea what he has just unleashed."
