Chapter 5: The Turn of the Tide

Three Months Later

The cold waters of the Pacific had been replaced by the sparkling, sun-kissed waves of the Mediterranean.

The Romano estate in Sicily sat high on a cliff overlooking the ocean, surrounded by blooming lemon groves and ancient stone walls. It was a place of immense beauty, but for generations, it had been a fortress of secrets and blood.

Today, the atmosphere was different. The heavy iron gates were wide open, and the scent of fresh jasmine carried on the warm Italian breeze.

Inside the grand study, Lena stood in front of a massive mahogany desk. She was no longer wearing a stained apron or a cheap uniform. She wore a stunning, emerald-green silk dress that complemented her hazel eyes perfectly. Her hair was styled in elegant waves, and on her wrist sat a delicate diamond bracelet—a gift from Matteo that she had actually chosen herself.

For the past three months, Lena had been working alongside Matteo’s legal team, dismantling the remnants of the Russo empire and setting up a massive foundation in her father's name to help families affected by organized crime. She wasn't an outsider anymore; she was the brains of the new, legitimate Romano enterprise.

The double doors opened, and Matteo walked in. He looked relaxed, his usual tense posture completely gone. He walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, burying his face into the crook of her neck.

"The federal prosecutors in New York just called," Matteo whispered, his lips brushing against her skin. "Victor and Vivian Russo just pled guilty to racketeering, smuggling, and conspiracy. They are going away for a very long time, Lena."

Lena leaned back into his solid chest, a profound sense of peace washing over her. "It's finally done."

"Not quite," Matteo said, pulling back and turning her around to face him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out that same old-fashioned gold key. "There’s one vault we haven't opened yet. The one at the bottom of the estate. The private family vault."

Lena smiled, taking the key. "What's inside? More mafia secrets?"

"Go look for yourself," Matteo smiled, his grey eyes shining with warmth.
