Chapter 1: The Code of the Crown

“Lena,” she said, her voice carrying a quiet defiance that cut through the suffocating tension of the hallway. “Lena Carter.”
Matteo Romano looked down at the heavy gold key resting in his palm. The black enamel crest—the serpent wrapping around a crown—was the sigil of the Romano syndicate. But this wasn’t just any key. This was the master key to a secure vault beneath his family’s estate in Sicily, a vault containing documents that could destroy half the politicians standing in this very hallway.
Only three people in the world possessed this key. Matteo, his underboss, and... his late father.
He looked at Vivian, whose breath was coming in short, shallow gasps. Then he looked back at Lena, noticing the faint red outline of a handprint on the fabric of her apron pocket, right where the key had been found. Someone had planted it. Rough, hasty fingers had shoved it into her apron during the chaos of the fake confrontation.
"Matteo, darling," Vivian said, her voice trembling as she tried to reclaim his attention. "She obviously used her position as a maid to rifle through your personal belongings. We need to have ship security throw her in the brig until we dock in Juneau."
Matteo didn't answer his fiancée. Instead, he took two slow steps toward Lena. The crowd held its collective breath.
"Did you take the necklace, Lena?" Matteo asked, his low baritone voice surprisingly gentle.
"No," Lena replied, looking him dead in the eye. "And I didn't take that key. I don't even know what it opens."
Matteo leaned in slightly, his sharp eyes scanning her face, looking for the telltale twitch of a liar. He found none. What he did find was a memory. Looking closely at Lena's striking hazel eyes and the structure of her jaw, a ghost from his past flickered in his mind. The Carter family.
Ten years ago, a brilliant accountant named Thomas Carter had vanished after refusing to cook the books for a rival mafia family. Thomas had died protecting Romano secrets.
"She's telling the truth," Matteo announced, straightening up.
The hallway erupted into shocked whispers. Vivian’s face contorted with disbelief. "Matteo, are you insane? The evidence was literally on her! Harper filmed the whole thing!"
"Harper," Matteo said calmly, turning his gaze to the thin blonde. "Delete the video. If a single frame of this appears online, I will buy the network your father owns and fire him by sunset."
Harper’s phone slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the carpet. She scrambled to pick it up, her face white with terror.
"Marco," Matteo ordered his underboss. "Take Miss Carter to my private suite. Ensure she is given dry clothes and medical attention for her hands. Nobody touches her. Nobody speaks to her."

"Matteo, you can't be serious!" Vivian shrieked, her carefully practiced composure completely shattering. "You're taking the maid to your suite? On our wedding cruise?!"
Matteo turned to Vivian, his grey eyes turning into chips of ice. "The wedding is paused, Vivian. Because if that key was in her pocket... it means the traitor who stole it from my safe is standing in this hallway. And I'm going to find out who it is."
