Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Six months passed, transforming life at Grand Crest Manor.
Under Claire’s watchful eye, the mansion felt less like an armed fortress and more like a real home. The grand ballroom, once cold and sterile, was now frequently filled with Lily’s laughter. Claire had overhauled the entire household security protocol regarding food, cross-referencing every ingredient brought into the estate.
More importantly, Claire had become an anchor for both Lily and Dominic.
Every evening after dinner, Claire would sit with Lily in the nursery, helping her with homework or reading fairy tales. And almost every evening, Dominic would stand near the doorway, leaning against the frame, watching them with a look of profound peace.
However, peace in Dominic Romano's world was always fragile.
One rainy Tuesday evening in late autumn, Claire was reviewing Lily's monthly health logs in the manor's private library. The soft pitter-patter of rain tapped against the tall stained-glass windows.
The library doors opened, and Dominic walked in. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling his crisp white shirt sleeves up to his elbows. He looked tired, but when he saw Claire, his expression noticeably brightened.
"Lily is fast asleep," Dominic said, pouring himself two fingers of amber bourbon at the bar. He paused, holding up the decanter. "Join me?"
"Just a small one," Claire smiled, closing her logbook.
He walked over and handed her the crystal glass. Their fingers brushed briefly, sending a sudden, unmistakable spark through Claire’s chest. Over the past few months, it had become increasingly difficult for her to ignore how deeply handsome, intelligent, and fiercely protective Dominic was. He wasn't the monster the media portrayed; he was a man forced to be ruthless to protect the people he loved.
"I received a call from Philadelphia today," Dominic said casually, sitting on the edge of the large wooden desk near her.
Claire froze, her glass stopping halfway to her lips. "Philadelphia?"
"Mercy Children's Hospital," Dominic continued. "I had my legal team look into your nursing license suspension."
Claire looked down at her glass, her heart racing. "Mr. Romano, I told you the truth. A surgeon made a mistake during a procedure, and—"
"—and Dr. Richard Vance blamed you for a wrong dosage calculation to protect his own reputation," Dominic finished her sentence. "I know. My lawyers obtained the original pharmacy logs. Dr. Vance altered the chart post-surgery."
Claire’s eyes snapped up to his, wide with shock. "What?"
"Your license was fully reinstated this morning, Claire," Dominic said softly, handing her an official envelope stamped with the seal of the State Board of Nursing. "You're a registered nurse again. Clean record. Full back pay awarded from the hospital."
Tears sprang to Claire’s eyes. For three years, she had carried the crushing weight of disgrace, believing her career was over forever. "Dominic... how... why did you do this?"
"Because you deserved justice," he said softly, using her first name without his usual formal title. He stepped closer, leaning down slightly so his eyes were level with hers. "And because a woman who saved my daughter's life shouldn't have to spend her days hiding in the shadows."
Claire wiped a stray tear from her cheek, smiling through her emotion. "Thank you. You have no idea what this means to me."
"I have some idea," Dominic said quietly. His hand moved instinctively, his warm fingers gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. His gaze lingered on her lips, and for a breathless second, the entire world outside the library disappeared.
Before either of them could bridge the small distance between them, the heavy oak doors burst open.
Marco strode into the room, his face dark with urgency. "Boss. We have a situation."
Dominic immediately stepped back from Claire, his boss persona instantly snapping back into place. "What is it?"
"It's Vanessa's brother, Julian Whitmore," Marco said, holding up a black tablet. "He just made a move against our shipping docks in Newark. And boss... he didn't do it alone. He's teamed up with the Moretti family from New York."
Dominic’s jaw clenched. The Moretti family was the Romanos' fiercest rival—a cartel known for extreme violence and ruthless corporate takeovers.
"Julian wants revenge for what happened to Vanessa," Marco added. "They know we cleared out the doctors and staff loyal to Whitmore. They're striking at our supply chain."
Dominic turned back to Claire. The tender moment had been shattered, replaced by the grim reality of his dangerous life.
"Claire," Dominic said firmly. "I need you to stay inside the estate with Lily tonight. Do not open the doors for anyone except Marco or me. Is that understood?"
May you like
"Dominic, be careful," Claire said, her voice laced with genuine fear for him.
He looked at her, his eyes burning with an intense, unspoken emotion. "I always come back to my family, Claire. Always."
