Chapter 4 - Night at the Brownstone

Rain poured in thick, blinding sheets as Daniel’s armored Mercedes tore through the cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill, running red lights with its emergency strobes flashing.

Inside the darkened brownstone, Grace held Maya tightly against her chest in the master bedroom walk-in closet. The power had failed five minutes ago, plunging the house into absolute darkness save for the periodic flashes of lightning outside.

Downstairs, the sound of shattering glass echoed through the hallway, followed by heavy, quick footsteps.

"Mommy..." Maya whimpered into Grace's neck, clutching her tiny teddy bear so hard its seams strained. "I'm scared."

"Shh, baby, stay completely quiet," Grace whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She grabbed a heavy iron fireplace poker from the hearth and stood near the closet door, her knuckles white.

Footsteps creaked up the wooden staircase.

"Grace!" a voice called out from the dark hallway. It wasn't a coarse thug's voice—it was refined, arrogant, and instantly recognizable.

Richard Vance.

"Grace, don't make this difficult," Vance said, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Just give us Marcus's notebook, and we'll leave you and your daughter untouched. We only want what belongs to us."

Grace gasped softly. Marcus's notebook? She had no idea what he was talking about. Marcus had left her his military medals, his dog tags, and a box of old love letters—nothing more!

"I don't have any notebook!" Grace screamed from inside the closet, holding the iron poker raised high. "Leave us alone, or the police will be here in minutes!"

Vance laughed dryly from the hallway. "The local precinct received a false report of a gas leak three blocks away, Grace. No one is coming. Open the door!"

The bedroom door crashed open. Heavy footsteps crossed the rug toward the closet.

Grace didn't wait. As the closet door was pulled open, revealing a masked man holding a tactical flashlight, Grace swung the iron poker with all the strength of a mother protecting her child.

The heavy iron caught the man squarely across the shoulder, sending him staggering backward with a groan.

"Run, Maya!" Grace yelled, grabbing her daughter and darting out of the closet into the master bedroom.

But Vance was standing near the doorway, holding a silver revolver. His eyes were wide, manic, and desperate.

"Enough!" Vance barked, aiming the weapon directly at Grace. "You're ruining everything! Give me the ledger!"

"I tell you, I don't have it!" Grace cried out, standing heroically in front of Maya.

"Then you're useless to me," Vance snarled, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the main hallway.

Daniel broke through the bedroom doorway like an unstoppable force of nature. Before Vance could turn his weapon, Daniel tackled the lawyer with full force, slamming him hard against the brick fireplace wall.

The revolver flew from Vance's grip, clattering across the hardwood floor.

Daniel slammed Vance into the wall again, pinning his throat with an iron forearm. "Touch her again," Daniel growled, his face inches from Vance's pale, trembling visage, "and I will personally make sure you never see the light of day."

Outside, sirens finally began to wail in the distance as additional security teams and police units arrived on the scene. Vance's hired thugs, realizing the operation had failed, fled into the night, only to be tackled and handcuffed on the rain-soaked lawn by Daniel's men.

Grace collapsed onto her knees, breathless, pulling Maya into a fierce embrace.

Daniel immediately released Vance, letting the gasping attorney slump to the floor, and rushed to Grace’s side. He dropped to his knees, taking her face gently in his hands, his eyes scanning her frantically.

"Are you hurt? Did he touch you?" Daniel asked, his voice raspy with emotion.

"We're okay... we're okay," Grace sobbed, burying her face into Daniel's chest. "Daniel, he kept asking for a notebook... Marcus's ledger. I swear I don't have it!"

Maya, who was sitting between them, held up her worn brown teddy bear.

"Mr. Bear has a secret pocket," Maya said innocently, her sweet voice cutting through the heavy adrenaline in the room.

Daniel and Grace both stopped, looking down at the little girl.

"What did you say, sweetheart?" Daniel asked softly.

Maya turned the teddy bear over, pointing to the hand-stitched star patch on its left foot. "Daddy said Mr. Bear keeps special papers safe in his foot. When I was sad, I used to feel the hard paper inside."

Grace’s mouth fell open. "The star patch..."

Daniel quickly pulled out his pocket knife, carefully snipping the navy blue threads around the star-shaped patch on the bear's foot. He reached inside the soft cotton stuffing and pulled out a tightly rolled, waterproof micro-flash-drive bound with black tape.

Marcus Bennett hadn't hidden his evidence in a bulky notebook. He had stored the entire digital ledger onto a drive and sewn it inside his daughter's teddy bear before his final deployment, knowing it would remain safe with the only person he trusted in the world.

Daniel held the drive in his hand, looking at Grace with awe and profound respect.

"Marcus didn't just save my life, Grace," Daniel whispered. "He left us the key to clean up the corruption once and for all."
