Chapter 3 - The Broken Ledger

Over the next three weeks, the quiet tranquility of the Berkshire estate was shattered by a whirlwind of corporate political maneuvering and intense investigation.
Daniel moved Grace and Maya out of the mansion and into a stunning, fully furnished brownstone house he owned in downtown Boston, just fifteen minutes from the headquarters of Whitfield Logistics. He assigned a top-tier security team to watch over them discreetly, ensuring that paparazzi and corporate spies hired by the board couldn't harass them.
For Maya, life changed overnight. She was enrolled in a prestigious early learning center, her days filled with art classes, music, and playground fun. But for Grace, peace was elusive.
Every day after work at her new office at the Whitfield Foundation, Grace poured over digital archives, FOIA requests, and Marcus's old letters, determined to clear her late husband's name.
Inside the glass-walled executive suite at Whitfield Logistics on a rainy Tuesday evening, Daniel sat across from his private investigator, a former CIA operative named Frank Vance (no relation to Richard Vance).
"What did you find, Frank?" Daniel asked, sliding a glass of scotch across the desk.
Frank pulled a thick, red folder from his leather briefcase and laid it out between them. "It's ugly, Daniel. The rumor about Marcus Bennett stealing military equipment? It wasn't an official military report. It was leaked to the press three days ago from an anonymous IP address located right here in Boston."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. "Who traced it?"
"My tech team did," Frank replied, opening the folder to reveal a series of bank transfers and server logs. "The IP address traces back to a private server registered to a shell company called Apex Holdings. And guess who owns forty percent of Apex Holdings?"
Daniel felt an icy stillness settle over him. "Tell me."
"Your brother's estate. Specifically managed by your sister-in-law, Diana Whitfield, and your mother’s legal advisor, Richard Vance."
Daniel slammed his fist onto the desk, rattling the crystal glasses. "Diana and Vance? Why the hell would they target a dead soldier?"
"Because of what Marcus Bennett was actually doing before he died," Frank explained, pointing to a set of redacted logistics manifests. "Seven years ago, when Marcus saved your life in Eastern Europe, your family's company—Whitfield Logistics—was supplying humanitarian aid routes in that sector. But someone inside your company was using those aid trucks to traffic illegal black-market arms and looted antiquities."
Daniel leaned forward, his heart pounding. "What?"
"Marcus didn't just stumble upon your crashed SUV by accident that night, Daniel," Frank revealed, his voice low and serious. "He was investigating the illegal supply convoy running through his sector. He realized that Whitfield Logistics equipment was being used by rogue operators. Before he died, Marcus compiled a ledger—a physical black notebook detailing every corrupt executive involved."
Daniel gasped softly. "And Diana and Vance were part of it?"
"They weren't just part of it, Daniel—they were running it," Frank said grimly. "When Marcus died, they thought the ledger disappeared with him. But when you brought Grace and Maya into the spotlight on Christmas Eve, Diana panicked. She realized that if Marcus had passed that ledger down to his wife, your newfound relationship with Grace could expose a multi-million-dollar federal crime that carries twenty years in prison."
Daniel stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked streets of Boston. The truth hit him like a physical blow.
Marcus hadn't just saved his life from a physical crash—Marcus had been trying to protect Daniel's company from being destroyed from the inside by his own family members.
"Where is the ledger now?" Daniel asked, his voice dripping with cold fury.
"We don't know," Frank admitted. "Grace says she never saw a black notebook. But Diana and Vance think she has it. And that makes Grace and little Maya extremely dangerous targets."
At that exact moment, Daniel’s personal phone buzzed on the desk.
He picked it up. It was a call from Grace’s assigned security detail leader, Sam.
"Boss," Sam’s voice sounded panicked through the speaker, accompanied by the screech of tires and rain. "We have an emergency. Two black SUVs just rammed our escort vehicle outside Miss Bennett's brownstone. They've cut the power to the street!"
Daniel’s blood ran ice-cold. "Where is Grace?!"

"She's inside with the child!" Sam yelled over the sound of wind. "I'm engaging the intruders, but we need backup now!"
"Hold them off!" Daniel roared, grabbing his coat and drawing a concealed firearm from his desk drawer. "I'm ten minutes away!"
