Chapter 4 - THE RAT IN THE CELLAR

Deep beneath the bedrock of the Moretti estate sat the old wine cellars—a subterranean labyrinth of stone vaults, steel doors, and thick oak barrels that had been converted into a high-security interrogation bunker fifty years ago.

The air was cold, damp, and smelled of rust, old stone, and iron.

Tied securely to a heavy iron chair in the middle of a stone chamber was Dominic Moretti. His custom silk suit was torn, his hair disheveled, and dark bruises lined his jaw.

Standing opposite him was Alessandro, dressed in a dark tactical shirt, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his thick, scarred forearms. Beside him stood Marco, holding a heavy leather binder containing bank ledgers and encrypted chat transcripts.

"I am your father's brother, Alessandro!" Dominic wept, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls. "You can't treat me like a common street traitor! I made one mistake!"

"You put two hundred steel ball bearings under my eight-year-old son's birthday candles, Dominic," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he poured a glass of cold water from a pitcher on the steel table. "That is not a mistake. That is high treason."

Alessandro stepped forward, tossing the glass of cold water directly into Dominic’s face.

"A-Agh!" Dominic gasped, choking on the water.

"Where is Hector Reyes?" Alessandro asked softly.

Dominic swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward the reinforced steel door. "I... I don't know where he is! He contacted me six months ago through an intermediary! He offered me fifty million dollars in offshore trusts and control of the New Jersey shipping docks if I helped him eliminate you and Matteo!"

"And what did he want in return?" Alessandro asked, leaning down until his nose was an inch from his uncle's face.

"He wanted the girl!" Dominic sobbed, breaking under the terrifying pressure of his nephew's gaze. "He wanted Sophia and the kid! He said Sophia stole his daughter and fled Chicago! He swore he would burn New York to the ground to get his blood back!"

Alessandro stood up slowly.

He picked up his heavy leather gloves from the table, pulling them onto his large hands with slow, deliberate precision.

"He called her 'his blood,'" Alessandro murmured, his tone dropping into a dark, lethal register. "But he beat her when she was pregnant. He left her with nothing. And then he tried to murder my son to steal her back."

"Alessandro, please!" Dominic begged, crawling as much as his iron chains would allow. "I didn't know he was going to use a bomb! He told me it would be a clean sniper hit on the road! I swear to God!"

"Your word is worth less than the mud on my boots, Dominic," Alessandro said flatly.

He turned to Marco.

"Is the transaction complete?" Alessandro asked.

"Yes, Don Alessandro," Marco replied, handing him a tablet screen. "We traced Hector Reyes's signal to an abandoned grain terminal on the Brooklyn waterfront. He has forty heavily armed Chicago mercenaries waiting there right now. He thinks Dominic is meeting him to collect the second half of the payment."

Alessandro looked at the tablet screen, a sinister, victorious smile breaking across his handsome face.

"Tell the tactical teams to deploy the heavy assault gear," Alessandro ordered. "We leave in ten minutes."

"What about your uncle, Don Alessandro?" Marco asked, pointing his chin toward Dominic.

Alessandro walked toward the heavy steel exit door, not bothering to give his uncle a second glance.

"Strip him of his name, his money, and his titles," Alessandro commanded cold-heartedly. "And put him on a freighter to South America. If he ever sets foot in North America again... put a bullet through his heart."

"Alessandro! No! Please!" Dominic screamed as the heavy steel door slammed shut, sealing him in the darkness forever.

Alessandro walked up the stone stairs into the main house foyer, where Sophia was standing near the grand clock, holding a warm wool coat for him.

She looked at his dark, tactical gear, her eyes filled with deep worry and love.

"You're going after Hector, aren't you?" Sophia asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Alessandro walked over to her, taking the coat from her hands, then wrapping his massive arms around her waist, pulling her plush body close against his heart.

"I am going to finish what should have been done three years ago, my sweet Sophia," Alessandro whispered against her hair. "When I return tonight... you and Lily will finally be completely free."

Sophia looked up into his eyes, reaching out to press a firm, passionate kiss against his lips.

"Come back to us, Alessandro," Sophia whispered. "We are waiting for you."

"Always," Alessandro swore.
