Chapter 6 - The Crown of the Empire

The great hall of the Lake Geneva estate was filled with warmth, music, and the delicious aroma of roasted feast and fresh pastries.

Dominic, the hardened Chicago mob captain who had once ordered hits across three states, was currently kneeling on the Persian rug in a high-end suit, wearing a neon-green paper crown while four-year-old Poppy adjusted a plastic pink tiara on his head.

"Does it look majestic, Poppy?" Dominic asked, trying his best to look solemn.

"It looks very pretty, Uncle Dom," Poppy declared, patting his bald head approvingly.

Guests from across the city—business partners, charity directors, and trusted friends—laughed and conversed around the magnificent stone fireplace. The past was gone. Graham Voss and his conspirators were serving life sentences in a maximum-security federal facility, their names completely erased from Chicago's power structures.

Silas stood by the wide glass doors overlooking the snow-covered garden, holding a glass of wine, his arm resting securely around Mara’s waist.

Poppy came running across the room, her small shoes squeaking on the polished wood floor, holding a brand-new set of pink plastic scissors—a heavy-duty craft pair with rounded safety tips that Silas had personally ordered from a specialty manufacturer.

"Look, Mr. Silas!" she cheered, holding up a perfectly cut paper heart. "I didn't break them!"

Silas knelt down, taking the paper heart from her small hands with the utmost care.

"You never break anything, Poppy," Silas said gently, touching her nose with his finger. "You only fix things."

Poppy beamed with pride, wrapping her small arms around Silas’s neck in a tight hug. Silas lifted her up into his arms, holding her close while Mara wrapped her arms around both of them.

Outside, the snow continued to fall silently over the lake, painting the world in clean, untouched white.

Inside, the most feared man in Chicago looked down at his family—the maid who had seen through his shadows, and the toddler who had cut his chains—and realized that the greatest empire he would ever rule was built entirely on love.
