Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Unravels

Ten minutes later, the reinforced vault door was sealed from the inside.
Inside the well-lit, high-tech sanctuary, Poppy sat on a plush leather sofa, happily chewing on a juice box that Silas had pulled from the emergency supplies. She was completely oblivious to the blood on Silas's shoulder, having been thoroughly distracted by Mara, who had wrapped Silas in a clean blanket and bandaged his arm with heavy gauze.
"Mr. Silas," Poppy said between sips, pointing at his bandage. "You got a big booboo."
"I did," Silas said softly, sitting on the small coffee table in front of her, his voice softer than Mara had ever heard it. "But your rabbit scissors broke it."
Poppy frowned, holding up her hands. "Now I can't make paper crowns."
"I will buy you a thousand paper crowns," Silas promised, his dark eyes shining with an emotion he rarely allowed himself to feel.
On the central control terminal, three large monitors blinked to life. Silas operated the keyboard with his uninjured hand, launching an encrypted frequency that bypassed the mansion’s compromised internal comms.
Within seconds, the faces of four men appeared on the screen—Silas’s highest-ranking regional captains, men who controlled the docks, the transport lines, and the city’s private security networks.
"Boss!" one of the captains, an older man named Dominic, gasped in shock. "Where are you? Voss told us you were kidnapped by the Detroit syndicate yesterday! He’s calling an emergency meeting at the harbor tower in an hour!"
"Graham Voss is a traitor," Silas said, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen. "He ambushed me in my own home with hired contractors. He’s currently locked in my cellar along with his men."
The captains on the screen went dead silent.
"He tried to execute an emergency takeover using forged Swiss documents," Silas continued. "I want every gate at the harbor locked down immediately. I want Voss’s accounts frozen, his associates rounded up, and anyone who backed his play brought to the warehouse on 14th Street."
"Consider it done, Boss," Dominic spat, his eyes burning with fury. "Do you need a tactical team to clear the mansion?"
"No," Silas said, looking over at Mara, who was quietly wiping glitter off Poppy’s hands with a wet napkin. "The mansion is secure. My automated defense grid will engage in thirty seconds. Just clear the harbor."
Silas ended the call and pressed a red manual override on the desk.
Through the vault’s security monitors, Mara watched as heavy steel shutters slammed down over every window and exterior door of the North Shore estate. High-frequency siren alarms echoed through the upper floors, and automated gas systems flooded the hallways, rendering Graham’s remaining men unconscious within seconds.
The entire siege was over in less than fifteen minutes.
Mara let out a long, shuddering breath, sinking back against the leather sofa. She had spent three years trying to be invisible, trying to protect her daughter from the cold realities of the world, only to find herself right at the center of a mob war.
Silas walked over to her, holding two clean bottles of water. He handed one to her, his hand briefly touching hers.
"You saved my life today, Mara," Silas said quietly. "Both of you."
"I just wanted to keep my daughter safe," Mara whispered, looking down at her hands. "I know who you are, Silas. I’ve always known. But I also know you gave us a home when no one else would."
Silas sat beside her, looking at the small girl who was now fast asleep on the leather cushion, her thumb tucked in her mouth.
"This house isn't safe for you anymore," Silas said, a strange heavy tightness in his chest.
Mara’s heart sank. She knew what was coming. She would have to pack their bags again. Forty-three dollars had grown into a small savings account, but the thought of leaving the security of the estate terrified her.
"I understand," Mara said, swallowing hard. "We’ll leave as soon as the police clear the roads."
"You misunderstood me," Silas interrupted gently, turning to look her directly in the eyes. "This house isn't safe because it has too many ghosts and too many entry points. Tomorrow, I am selling the North Shore estate. I am buying a private compound in the hills near Lake Geneva."

Mara blinked. "And... us?"
"You and Poppy are coming with me," Silas said, his voice absolute and unyielding. "Not as domestic staff, Mara. As my family."
