Chapter 4 - The Confession

The ambient chatter of the surrounding guests seemed to mute itself, swallowed by the suffocating tension radiating from the two men.

Marcus forced a tight, brittle smile to his lips, though his eyes darted frantically toward the exits.

“Adrian... you’re back,” Marcus said, his voice uncharacteristically strained. “Where on earth did you run off to? People are starting to talk, and—”

“Cut the act, Marcus,” Adrian interrupted quietly. He took two slow steps forward, shielding Lily with his broad shoulders. “The show is over.”

Marcus swallowed hard, trying to project a wounded camaraderie. “I don't know what you’re talking about, man. You look pale. Let’s go into the back office, get you a drink—”

“I said, cut the act!”

Adrian’s voice didn't roar. It didn't need to. It was a whipcrack that echoed across the marbled foyer, causing several nearby executives to turn and stare in shock.

Marcus’s face lost what little color it had left. The mask slipped completely, revealing the cornered animal beneath.

“You brought her back here?” Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with disbelief as he stared at the baby in Adrian’s arms. “You stupid, arrogant bastard. I spent months making sure she was erased, and you brought her right back into the wolf’s den?”

A collective gasp rippled through the guests standing nearby. Phones began to drop into purses. Conversations died instantly.

“So you admit it,” Adrian said, his eyes locking onto Marcus with a gaze so lethal it made the older man take an involuntary step back. “You engineered the ambush. You killed Evelyn. You tried to slaughter my newborn daughter.”

Marcus realized he had crossed the Rubicon. There was no going back, no charming his way out of this with a glass of scotch and a pat on the back.

He slowly let his shoulders drop, a dark, cynical chuckle escaping his throat.

“And if I did?” Marcus sneered, his hand sliding subtly toward the inside pocket of his jacket where a concealed Walther PPK rested. “You think you can just execute me here in front of three hundred witnesses? You think the judges and politicians in this room are going to let you drag our empire down into the mud over a dead woman and a bastard baby?”

“You assume I care about the judges and politicians,” Adrian said softly.

Before Marcus’s fingers could wrap around the grip of his gun, Adrian moved with terrifying, blinding speed.

He handed Lily into the waiting arms of Grace, who had materialized from the shadows behind him, then exploded forward across the marble floor.

Marcus drew his pistol, but Adrian was already there. With a brutal, calculated strike, Adrian slammed his palm upward against Marcus’s wrist. The gun discharged into the high plaster ceiling with a deafening crack, raining plaster dust down upon the crystal chandelier.

Before the echo could fade, Adrian swept Marcus’s legs out from under him, sending the older man crashing hard onto the marble floor.

The room erupted into screams. Guests scrambled backward, overturning chairs, scattering champagne glasses across the floor as security guards rushed toward the scene.

“Hold your ground!” Adrian shouted without turning around, his boot planted squarely on Marcus’s chest, pressing down with bone-crushing weight.

The security guards—men who had served under Adrian for a decade—stopped dead in their tracks, recognizing the absolute authority in his voice.

Marcus gasped for air, clawing at Adrian’s polished leather shoe, his face turning purple.

“Kill me,” Marcus choked out, staring up into the dead eyes of his former best friend. “Go ahead. Do it.”

“Killing you would be a mercy,” Adrian said, leaning down until his face was inches from Marcus’s. “You’re going to spend the rest of your natural life in a concrete box six floors beneath federal custody. Every asset you own, every shell corporation you built, every associate whose name you whispered—I’m going to strip it all away until you have nothing left except the memory of what you tried to steal from me.”

Adrian slowly lifted his foot from Marcus’s chest.

Two security guards stepped forward, hoisting Marcus roughly to his feet by his biceps and snapping heavy steel zip-ties around his wrists.

As they dragged him away toward the service elevators, Marcus’s curses echoed hollowly down the marble corridor until the heavy steel doors slid shut.
