Chapter 3 - The Trap at the Mansion

Back at the Highland Park memorial hall, the crystal chandeliers still sparkled, casting dancing prisms of light over the three hundred guests who lingered near the catering tables, speaking in hushed, respectful tones.

The violin music had stopped.

Near the front entrance, Marcus Reed stood alone by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the rain with a glass of amber whiskey in his hand. His tie was slightly loosened, his expression a mask of calm calculation.

Yet, beneath that calm, a subtle twitch pulsed at the corner of his jaw.

Where did Adrian go?

The question had been eating at him for the last hour. When Adrian walked out with the housekeeper and the child, Marcus had felt a cold spike of panic he hadn't experienced since their early days in the syndicate. Could the kid have said something? Could Grace have cracked?

Marcus pulled out his encrypted burner phone, dialing a ten-digit number.

It rang twice before a raspy voice answered on the other end.

“Status,” Marcus barked quietly into the receiver.

“We’re watching the estate and the side roads, boss,” a heavy-set enforcer replied. “Ain't seen Vale’s sedan come this way. But we spotted his primary security detail pulling back toward the main gates. Something’s up.”

“Find him,” Marcus ordered, his voice dropping to a hiss. “And if he’s gone to Door County—if he’s looking for the old man—make sure neither of them makes it back to Chicago.”

“Consider it handled.”

Marcus hung up, slipping the burner phone back into his suit jacket. He took a long sip of whiskey, trying to soothe the burning acid in his stomach. He had planned the ambush down to the microsecond eight months ago. He had engineered the crash, bought off the federal investigators, and orchestrated Evelyn’s murder to ensure that Adrian’s bloodline would be wiped out, leaving Marcus as the sole power behind the throne.

He had calculated every single variable.

Except a three-year-old girl with a tin cup and a gray rabbit.

“Looking for someone, Marcus?”

The voice came from directly behind him—low, flat, and carrying the icy chill of a tomb.

Marcus froze. The glass in his hand nearly slipped from his fingers, a few drops of amber liquid splashing against the polished marble floor.

He slowly turned around.

Adrian Vale stood ten feet away.

He was wearing his black mourning suit, perfectly tailored, but his posture was different. The grieving widower was gone. In his place stood the apex predator of the Chicago underworld—the man who built an empire on blood, discipline, and absolute, unforgiving dominance.

And tucked securely against Adrian’s chest, wrapped in a pink blanket, was baby Lily.
