Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Thursday morning arrived with cold, blinding clarity.

The emergency shareholder meeting of Asterline Systems was held on the top floor of the elite Financial Tower in downtown Chicago. The glass boardroom offered a panoramic view of Lake Michigan, but inside, the temperature was freezing.

At the head of the long oak table sat Richard Langston, flanked by his legal team and Bradley Vance, the traitorous CFO. Richard looked arrogant, victorious, and completely in control. Across the room sat fifteen major shareholders, whispered conversations filling the air.

"Where is Harrow?" Richard asked, checking his gold Rolex. "It’s 10:00 AM. If he fails to appear, the board will automatically proceed with the vote to remove him."

"I'm right here, Richard," a voice echoed from the doorway.

The heavy double doors opened, and Marcus Harrow walked into the boardroom.

He was wearing a tailored black suit, looking completely pristine, confident, and formidable. But what shocked everyone in the room was the woman walking beside him.

Camille Avery walked into the high-stakes corporate meeting with her head held high. She wore an elegant, tailored navy-blue dress, her brown hair swept back gracefully. She carried a sleek leather briefcase, walking beside Marcus not as a servant, but as his equal.

Richard Langston let out a loud, mocking laugh. "Is this a joke, Marcus? You bring your maid to a billionaire board meeting? Have you completely lost your mind?"

Bradley Vance smirked. "Mr. Harrow, this is highly irregular. Non-shareholders are not permitted in executive sessions."

Marcus walked to the end of the table, pulling out a chair for Camille before taking his own seat at the head of the board.

"Miss Avery is here as my official representative and Executive Director of Operations," Marcus stated calmly. "And she is here to present the evidence that will conclude this meeting."

Richard sneered, leaning forward. "Enough with the theatrics! We are here to vote on the motion of no confidence. Asterline’s stock is down twenty percent. You failed as CEO, Marcus. My firm owns the majority voting bloc today. You're finished."

"Call the vote then, Richard," Marcus smiled faintly. "Let's see where the shares lie."

Richard turned to the board secretary. "Initiate the proxy vote immediately."

Before the secretary could press a button, the doors of the boardroom burst open again.

Four uniformed agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission, walked into the room.

The atmosphere in the boardroom instantly turned to ice. Richard Langston stood up, his arrogant expression cracking for the first time. "What is the meaning of this? Who authorized you to enter this private facility?"

The lead FBI agent stepped forward, pulling a warrant from his coat. "Richard Langston? Bradley Vance?"

Bradley Vance’s face turned paper-white. He began sweating profusely, his hands trembling on the table.

"We have federal warrants for your arrest," the agent announced. "Charges include wire fraud, insider trading, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit market manipulation."

"This is outrageous!" Richard roared, pointing a finger at Marcus. "This is a setup! You have no evidence!"

Marcus looked at Camille. She opened her leather briefcase, pulled out a stack of pristine legal documents, and slid them across the long table toward the board members and federal agents.

"Everything is right there," Camille said, her voice clear, confident, and ringing with absolute authority through the silent room. "Complete bank records from offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, encrypted communications between Mr. Vance and Mr. Langston, and audio recordings from last night where Miss Victoria Langston explicitly detailed the plan to crash Asterline’s stock."

The board members gasped as they opened the folders, scanning the overwhelming, indisputable evidence.

"You traitorous little..." Richard snarled, lunging toward Camille.

Marcus stood up instantly, stepping between Richard and Camille, his large frame completely blocking the older man. Marcus grabbed Richard’s wrist in mid-air with a grip like iron.

"Touch her, Richard, and I won't wait for the FBI to handle you," Marcus whispered, his voice vibrating with terrifying power.

The FBI agents stepped in immediately, pulling Richard back and forcing his hands behind his back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. Beside him, Bradley Vance sank into his chair, weeping silently as another agent cuffed him.

"Marcus! You can't do this to me!" Richard screamed as he was led toward the door in front of thirty corporate executives and camera crews that had gathered in the hallway outside. "I will destroy you! Do you hear me? The Langston family will destroy you!"

"The Langston family is bankrupt, Richard," Marcus said quietly as the agents pushed him through the doors. "Your assets were frozen twenty minutes ago."

The boardroom fell into stunned silence as the former titans of industry were dragged away in handcuffs.

Marcus turned to the remaining board members, who were staring at him in sheer awe.

"Now," Marcus said calmly, buttoning his suit jacket. "Shall we discuss Asterline’s Q4 growth strategy?"

The room erupted into overwhelming applause.
