Chapter 4 - The Traitor's Trap

Marcus did not survive in the cutthroat world of global technology by being passive. While Richard Langston believed he was tightening the noose around Asterline’s neck, Marcus was quietly orchestrating a counter-strike that would decimate his enemies.

The next morning, Marcus summoned his top legal team and chief security officer, Arthur, to his private study. Camille was present, sitting beside Marcus at the large conference table, officially recognized as his primary advisor.

"Richard Langston relies on fear and network manipulation," Marcus explained, projecting a complex financial web onto the large wall monitor. "He uses shell companies to short Asterline stock, driving the price down so his private equity firm can execute a hostile takeover. But to do that, he needed internal access."

Arthur stepped forward, tossing a thick dossier onto the table. "We found the mole inside Asterline. It's your CFO, Bradley Vance. He’s been feeding internal financial projections to Langston for six months. In exchange, Langston promised him a twenty percent stake in the restructured company."

Camille gasped. "Bradley Vance? But he was at the engagement party! He was smiling and congratulating you!"

"In business, the deadliest snakes wear the most expensive suits," Marcus said coldly. "Vance thought he was smart. But he made one critical mistake. He used an encrypted server hosted on our internal network to transfer the confidential files."

"Can you trace it?" Camille asked.

"I don't need to trace it," Marcus smiled darkly. "I own the server. I built the encryption algorithms. I've had full access to every email, offshore bank transfer, and text message Vance has sent to Richard and Victoria Langston since day one."

Marcus turned to his head legal counsel. "Is the file ready?"

"It's complete, Mr. Harrow," the attorney replied. "We have evidence of insider trading, market manipulation, corporate espionage, and illegal wire transfers totaling over eighty million dollars. It's enough to put Richard Langston, Bradley Vance, and several of their associates in federal prison for fifteen years."

A surge of relief washed over Camille. "So it's over? You can release this to the SEC and stop them?"

Marcus’s expression hardened. "Not yet. If I release it now, Langston’s lawyers will tie it up in court for years, and Asterline’s stock will remain depressed. I need them to walk directly into the trap. I need them to launch their hostile takeover attempt at the shareholder emergency meeting this Thursday."

"You're going to let them think they're winning?" Camille asked, her eyes wide.

"I'm going to let them string their own gallows," Marcus declared.

However, Richard Langston was not a man to rely solely on financial maneuvers. Desperate people do desperate things, and as the deadline for the shareholder meeting approached, Victoria Langston realized that Marcus was not breaking.

Her hatred shifted entirely away from Marcus and focused squarely on the woman she believed was responsible for her humiliation: Camille.

On Wednesday afternoon, heavy clouds rolled over Lake Forest, bringing a dark, gloomy twilight early in the day. Marcus had been called away to an urgent, off-site meeting with Asterline’s primary bank board in downtown Chicago—a distraction secretly arranged by Vance.

Camille was in the west wing, helping Lily put together a large wooden jigsaw puzzle on the floor.

Suddenly, the house alarm system beeped softly, indicating that a gate had opened. Camille stood up, feeling an immediate, instinctual wave of unease. The staff had been trimmed down for the evening, and Arthur was currently accompanying Marcus in Chicago for security.

Camille walked out to the grand foyer.

The heavy front doors of the estate were open. Rain was blowing into the entryway. Standing on the marble floor—wet, disheveled, and holding a small leather folder—was Victoria Langston.

Camille stopped in her tracks, her hand instantly going to her phone in her cardigan pocket. "Victoria? How did you get through the gates?"

Victoria looked unhinged. Her immaculate hair was soaking wet and sticking to her face. Her eyes were bloodshot, filled with a wild, terrifying instability.

"The gate code hasn't been changed yet, you stupid bitch," Victoria spat, stepping into the foyer. Her heels clicked loudly against the wet marble. "Did you really think you could take my place? Did you really think Marcus would choose a maid over me?"

"You need to leave right now," Camille said, keeping her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. "Marcus isn't here, and security is on their way."

"Security?" Victoria laughed, a terrifying, hysterical sound. "The main security guard is in Chicago with Marcus! There’s no one here except you, your bastard child, and a couple of elderly housekeepers!"

Victoria pulled a document from her folder, waving it wildly. "My father is taking Marcus’s company tomorrow! He will be bankrupt by nightfall! But I couldn't wait until tomorrow. I wanted to see the look on your face when you realize you've destroyed him."

Behind Camille, a soft voice spoke up.

"Mommy?"

Lily had wandered out of the west wing, carrying her armless stuffed rabbit, looking confusedly at the wet woman standing in the foyer.

Victoria’s eyes locked onto Lily, and a dark, twisted expression crossed her face. "There she is," Victoria hissed, stepping forward. "The little rat who opened her mouth."

Instinct took over. Camille didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, placing her body entirely between Victoria and her daughter.

"Don't you dare come near my child!" Camille screamed, her soft voice replaced by the ferocious power of a protective mother.

Victoria reached into her coat, pulling out a heavy, glass perfume bottle—a thick, heavy crystal object—and swung it wildly at Camille’s face.

Camille raised her arms to block the blow. The heavy glass smashed against her forearm, hitting the exact spot where Victoria had bruised her weeks before. A sharp, burning pain shot up Camille’s arm, but she didn't retreat. She shoved Victoria back with all her strength, sending the wealthy socialite slipping on the wet marble floor and falling hard onto her back.

"Lily! Run to the kitchen! Hide in the pantry and lock the door!" Camille yelled.

Lily, terrified, turned and ran as fast as her small legs could carry her down the corridor.

Victoria scrambled to her feet, her face contorted in pure rage. "You ruined my life!" she shrieked, charging at Camille again.

Camille ducked beneath Victoria’s clumsy swing, grabbed Victoria by her soaked collar, and slammed her back against the heavy mahogany front door. Camille held her there, her breathing heavy, her eyes blazing with a fury that completely terrified Victoria.

"I spent my whole life being scared of people like you," Camille whispered into Victoria’s pale, trembling face. "Rich, cruel bullies who think they can break people because they have money. But you are nothing. You are weak, empty, and pathetic."

Before Victoria could react, the loud sound of screeching tires echoed outside the driveway.

Three black SUVs pulled up onto the gravel courtyard, headlights illuminating the rain. The doors flew open, and Marcus Harrow, followed by Arthur and four armed security officers, sprinted up the steps and burst through the front door.

Marcus took in the scene in a fraction of a second: Camille holding Victoria against the door, the shattered glass on the floor, and the rain pouring in.

"Camille!" Marcus yelled, rushing forward.

He pulled Camille back into his arms, checking her face and body frantically. "Are you hurt? Did she touch you?"

"I'm fine," Camille panted, leaning against his chest. "Lily is safe in the pantry."

Arthur and the security team instantly grabbed Victoria, pinning her arms behind her back. Victoria began screaming incoherently, kicking and fighting against the guards.

"Marcus! She attacked me! She tried to kill me!" Victoria shrieked.

Marcus didn't even look at her. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a recording device, and turned to Arthur.

"The silent alarm alerted us the second she entered the gate," Marcus said coldly. "We recorded every word she said, including her threats and her admission of her father’s corporate sabotage scheme."

Marcus looked at Victoria, his eyes darker than the midnight sky outside.

"You didn't just break the law tonight, Victoria," Marcus said softly. "You just handed me the key to destroy your father forever."
