Chapter 9: Blood and Redemption

"Lorenzo! No! It's a trap!" Emma screamed at the top of her lungs, running toward the front of the complex, holding Sophia’s hand.
The black SUV slammed to a halt. Lorenzo stepped out, a rifle in his hands, his face grim. Hearing Emma's voice, he instantly dived behind the engine block of his car just as a high-caliber sniper bullet shattered his windshield.
Crack!
The sound of gunfire echoed through the empty shipyard.
"Emma! Stay down!" Lorenzo roared, returning fire toward the roof of an adjacent building. His shots were precise, deadly. A second later, a body plummeted from the roof, crashing onto the gravel below. The sniper was neutralized.
But the danger wasn't over. Marco and three other armed men burst out of the main warehouse doors, opening fire on Lorenzo’s position.
Emma pulled Sophia behind a stack of heavy shipping pallets. "Stay here, Sophia. Don't move, no matter what."
Emma looked around for a weapon. She found a flare gun inside an open emergency box on the wall of the shipyard dock. It wasn't a real gun, but it would have to do.
Lorenzo was pinned down, his SUV riddled with bullets. He was a master marksman, taking down two of the gunmen, but Marco was flanking him from the left, aiming directly at Lorenzo's exposed side.
"Lorenzo, look out!" Emma yelled.
She aimed the flare gun at Marco and pulled the trigger. A brilliant, blinding red fireball erupted from the barrel, striking Marco squarely in the chest. His clothes caught fire, and he screamed in agony, dropping his weapon and stumbling backward into the dark, freezing waters of the Atlantic harbor.
The distraction gave Lorenzo the opening he needed. He spun around and shot the final gunman.
Silence fell over the shipyard, broken only by the lapping of the waves and the heavy breathing of the survivors.
Suddenly, a shadow lunged from behind the shipping pallets. It was Marcone, bleeding from his ribs, his face twisted in a psychotic rage. He didn't aim at Lorenzo. He aimed his gun directly at Sophia.
"If I die, the brat dies with me!" Marcone shrieked.
"No!" Lorenzo roared, but he was too far away.
Emma didn't think. She didn't calculate the risks. She threw her body over Sophia, shielding the little girl with her own life.
Bang!
The gunshot exploded in the night air.
Emma closed her eyes, waiting for the pain. But it didn't come. She opened them to see Marcone freezing in place. A single bullet hole was placed perfectly between his eyes. He collapsed forward, falling lifeless onto the concrete.
Lorenzo dropped his smoking gun, sprinting toward them. He fell to his knees, wrapping his arms around both of them so tightly they could barely breathe. He was weeping open, uncharacteristic tears, pressing kisses to Emma’s hair and Sophia’s face.

"I’ve got you. It’s over. It’s finally over," Lorenzo choked out, his voice cracking with emotion.
Emma looked at the bodies of their enemies, then up at the dark sky. The final remnants of the Pellegrini underworld had been wiped out. The blood debt was paid in full. They had survived the crucible, and this time, the dark would never return.
