Chapter 6: The Poisoned Gift

The following weeks transformed the Pellegrini estate back into a fortress. High-tech security fences were installed, armed guards patrolled the perimeter, and Sophia was no longer allowed to play on the beach. The air of joy had been replaced by a heavy, suffocating paranoia.

Lorenzo spent eighteen hours a day in his study, working his old contacts, trying to locate Matteo Marcone. Emma felt a growing distance between them. Every time she looked at Lorenzo, she saw the coldness in his eyes—the same coldness she had fought so hard to melt when she first arrived as Sophia’s doctor.

"You need to eat," Emma said one evening, walking into the study with a tray of food.

Lorenzo didn't look up from his laptop. "I can't, Emma. Marcone is smart. He’s hiding in plain sight, and he’s recruiting the remnants of the old families who are angry that I went legitimate. They see me as a traitor."

"We chose this path for Sophia," Emma reminded him gently, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Don't let him turn you back into a monster."

Lorenzo finally looked up, his eyes bloodshot, filled with pain. "If being a monster keeps you and Sophia alive, Emma, then I will gladly wear the crown of thorns again."

The next day was Sophia’s eighth birthday. Despite the tension, Emma was determined to give the little girl a normal celebration. They decorated the dining room with balloons, and Emma baked a chocolate cake. Lorenzo even managed to smile, presenting his daughter with a beautiful silver locket containing a picture of the three of them.

"Thank you, Papa! Thank you, Emma!" Sophia cheered, hugging them both.

Just then, the head of security, a trusted man named Marco, entered the room, holding a beautifully wrapped, oversized box. "Sir, this just arrived at the front gate. The delivery driver said it was a special birthday gift for Miss Sophia from an anonymous donor to the hospital."

Lorenzo instantly stood up, his hand moving to his jacket. "Stop. Nobody touch it."

Emma pulled Sophia back. "Marco, scan it for explosives."

"We did, sir. It cleared the metal detectors and X-ray," Marco replied, looking confused.

Lorenzo walked over, his eyes narrowing. He carefully sliced the ribbon with a pocket knife and opened the box. Inside was a magnificent, antique porcelain doll dressed in a Victorian silk gown. It looked harmless, beautiful even. Sophia gasped in delight. "Oh, she’s beautiful!"

"Wait," Emma said, her medical instincts suddenly flaring. She noticed a faint, sweet, chemical odor wafting from the box. It smelled like almonds, but sharper, more metallic. "Lorenzo, don't let her touch it."

Emma pulled a pair of latex gloves from her pocket—a habit she never broke—and carefully lifted the doll. She examined the delicate lace dress. Around the doll's neck was a small glass vial, concealed by a ribbon. The vial was cracked, slowly leaking a clear liquid onto the fabric.

Emma’s eyes widened in horror. "Cyanide derivative. It’s a contact poison. If Sophia had hugged this doll, it would have absorbed through her skin. She would have been dead in minutes."

Sophia began to cry, sensing the danger. Lorenzo’s face went completely blank. It was a terrifying sight—a man who had gone beyond anger into a state of absolute, lethal clarity.

"Marco, take Sophia upstairs. Lock down the house," Lorenzo commanded. His voice didn't shake; it was flat, devoid of human emotion.

Once they were alone, Lorenzo turned to Emma. "He bypassed my security. He targeted my daughter on her birthday. He sent a message that he can touch us whenever he wants."

"Lorenzo, we have to go to the FBI," Emma pleaded, grabbing his arm. "This is attempted murder, chemical terrorism!"

"The FBI works too slowly, Emma. By the time they file the warrants, Marcone will have struck again," Lorenzo said, pulling his arm away gently but firmly. "He wants a war. I’m going to give him one."

"Where are you going?" Emma cried out as he walked toward the door.

Lorenzo paused, looking back at her. The love in his eyes was warred with a dark, terrible purpose. "To find the man who sold him that poison. Don't wait up for me, Emma."

As the front door slammed shut, Emma collapsed into a chair. She looked at the toxic doll on the table. The virus of the mafia was spreading again, and she feared that even if they survived Marcone, she might lose the man she loved to the darkness forever.
