Chapter 4 - SECRETS IN THE SHADOWS

As autumn turned to winter, the connection between Clara, Rico, and little Leo grew deeper, blurring the lines between employer and family.
Rico began coming home early from his 'business' in the city. Instead of locking himself in his dark study with whiskey and financial ledgers, he spent evenings in the living room, sitting on the rug while Leo showed him his drawings. For the first time in over a year, Rico smiled—a genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed his harsh, sharp features into those of a deeply handsome, warm man.
Clara found herself watching him when he wasn't looking. She saw the way his eyes softened whenever he looked at Leo, the gentleness in his large hands when he tucked his son into bed, and the intense, protective gaze he directed at her whenever they shared quiet conversations late at night over tea in the kitchen.
She was falling in love with Ricardo Moretti. And it terrified her.
One snowy afternoon while Leo was taking his nap, Clara was organizing the books in the second-floor library. While sliding a heavy leather-bound atlas back onto a high shelf, a small metal box hidden behind the books slipped and crashed to the carpet floor, popping open.
Several old photographs and documents spilled across the rug.
Clara knelt down to gather them. As she picked up the papers, a official police record caught her eye. It was dated six months ago—the official investigation report into the drive-by shooting that killed Elena Moretti.
Clara didn't mean to read it, but a bolded red stamp across the top caught her attention: INTERNAL BETRAYAL SUSPECTED.
She scanned the lines quickly. According to the police report, Elena's car route on the night of her death had only been known to three people inside the Moretti organization: Rico, Marco, and Rico’s top lieutenant, a man named Paulie Viti.
Attached to the back of the report was a bank transaction statement showing a transfer of two million dollars into a private offshore account belonging to... Marco.
Clara’s blood ran cold.
Marco, the chief bodyguard who guarded the main gate, who stood outside Leo's door every night, who carried a gun inside the mansion—he was the one who had leaked Elena's location to Santino Rossi. He was the reason Leo had lost his mother.
"Find something interesting?" a cold voice spoke from the library doorway.
Clara jumped, dropping the papers. She spun around to see Marco standing in the doorway, his hand resting heavily on the grip of his holstered gun. His scarred face was twisted into a dark, menacing sneer.
"Marco..." Clara gasped, trying to keep her voice steady as she kicked the papers behind her skirt. "I... I just dropped a box."
Marco walked slowly into the room, closing the heavy mahogany door behind him. "You shouldn't go digging around places you don't belong, little waitress. The Boss thinks you're an angel, but angels bleed just like anyone else."
"You sold out Elena," Clara said, her voice trembling with righteous fury despite her fear. "You let those men kill Leo's mother for money!"
Marco’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Elena was getting soft. She was trying to convince Rico to pull out of the syndicate, to give up the power. I built this family alongside Rico's father! I wasn't going to let a woman ruin our empire."
He took out his gun, screwing a sleek black silencer onto the barrel with practiced ease.
"Rico is down in the city until tonight," Marco said coldly, stepping closer. "Tragic accident... the new nanny slipped on the icy balcony while checking on the child. Nobody will question it."
Clara’s heart slammed against her chest. She looked around frantically—there were no exits, no weapons, only heavy books.

"If you kill me," Clara said, taking a slow step backward toward the desk, "who is going to stop Leo from screaming when he wakes up? Who is going to cover his eyes when he realizes his father's closest friend is a murderer?"
"The kid will get over it," Marco grunted, raising the silenced gun aimed straight at her heart. "Say goodbye, Clara."
