Chapter 3 - DANGEROUS CURRENTS

Within three weeks, the atmosphere inside the Moretti estate had transformed.
The dark, oppressive quiet was replaced by the soft sounds of children's songs, laughter in the gardens, and the smell of fresh homemade cookies drifting from the kitchen. Clara had completely restructured Leo’s daily routine. She replaced the harsh security guards stationed inside his playroom with gentle boundaries, took him on walks around the private courtyard, and spent hours helping him express his feelings through finger painting and storytelling.
Leo’s night terrors decreased from four times a night to once every few days. He began eating solid meals, stopped biting, and clung to Clara like a shadow.
However, as Clara healed the heart of the child, she began to see the dark, dangerous world that surrounded his father.
One rainy Thursday evening, Clara was carrying a sleeping Leo back up to his bedroom after a late dinner. As she passed the upper balcony overlooking the grand foyer, she heard harsh, angry voices echoing from below.
She stopped in the shadows, keeping Leo secure in her arms, and peeked over the marble railing.
Rico stood in the foyer, flanked by Marco and four armed men. Standing opposite him was a man in a flashy burgundy leather coat with slicked-back hair and a jagged scar across his cheek—Santino Rossi, the ruthless head of the rival Brooklyn syndicate.
"You're losing your grip, Rico," Santino sneered, flicking a cigarette butt onto Rico’s pristine marble floor. "First your wife gets caught in the crossfire, now you're hiding out up here in Westchester playing daddy while your shipping docks in Queens are losing territory."
Rico didn't flinch. He stepped closer to Santino, his voice dropping to a register so deep and menacing it sent a shiver straight down Clara’s spine.
"My shipping docks are fully operational, Santino. And if you ever mention my wife in this house again, I won't just take your territory—I'll feed you to the crabs in the Hudson."
Santino laughed, a cruel, mocking sound. "You talk big, Moretti. But everyone knows you've gone soft. You hired some charity-case waitress to wipe your kid's nose because you can't handle a crying brat. Word on the street is the great Rico Moretti is being run by a nursery maid."
Clara swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs.
Rico’s hand moved so fast it was a blur. He grabbed Santino by the throat, slamming him violently against the front oak doors. Marco and the other men instantly drew their handguns, the sharp click-clack of chambers loading filling the room.
"Listen to me carefully, you pathetic snake," Rico growled, his face inches from Santino's turning-purple face. "You cross my line one more time, you bring your dirty business anywhere near my family, and I will erase everything you have ever built. Now get out of my house."
Rico shoved Santino backward. The rival boss stumbled, gasping for air, clutching his throat. He glared at Rico with pure, venomous hatred.
"This isn't over, Moretti," Santino wheezed, adjusting his collar as his men backed toward the exit. "You can't protect everyone forever."
The heavy oak doors slammed shut. The house fell into a tense, dangerous silence.
Clara backed away from the railing, her heart racing. She turned to walk quickly back toward the nursery, but her shoe clicked loudly against the floor tile.
"Who's there?" Rico’s voice cut through the darkness like a blade.
Clara stopped. She took a deep breath, adjusted sleeping Leo in her arms, and stepped into the light at the top of the stairs. "It's me, Mr. Moretti."
Rico looked up. The cold, murderous expression on his face instantly melted away into a look of concern. He walked up the grand staircase two steps at a time until he reached her.
"Did he wake up?" Rico asked, looking down at his son.
"No, he's fast asleep," Clara said softly. She looked into Rico's dark, exhausted eyes. "I... I overheard."
Rico’s expression darkened slightly. "It's none of your concern, Clara. That's business."
"When men with guns threaten this house, it becomes my concern because Leo is in it," Clara said firmly, refusing to back down. "He lost his mother to that 'business.' I won't let him lose his father, too."
Rico stared at her, caught off guard by her fierce protectiveness. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently tucking a loose lock of brown hair behind Clara’s ear. The touch was so sudden, so unexpectedly tender, that Clara’s breath caught in her throat.

"I won't let anything happen to him," Rico whispered, his gaze dropping to her lips for a brief, electric second before returning to her eyes. "Or to you."
A strange, thrilling warmth spread through Clara's chest, leaving her speechless as Rico turned and walked back down the stairs into the shadows of his dangerous world.
