Chapter 5 - The Little Guardian

The sun broke through the clouds over Long Island at 8:00 AM, casting a warm, golden light across the wet lawns of the Moretti estate.
In the sunroom overlooking the rear gardens, the massive floor-to-ceiling glass doors were open, letting in the fresh, crisp morning air.
Lying on a massive, plush orthopaedic dog bed—wrapped in a warm wool blanket—was Bruno.
The old mastiff was eating pieces of cooked steak directly out of a silver bowl held by three-year-old Lily.
Lily sat cross-legged on the floor beside him, her yellow raincoat replaced by a cute pink sweater, carefully feeding the huge dog one small piece of meat at a time. Bruno took each piece with extreme gentleness, his large tongue licking her tiny palm clean.
"Good boy, Bruno," Lily giggled, patting his broad, wrinkled head. "Eat your meat. It makes your legs strong."
Standing near the doorway, holding two warm cups of coffee, were Adrian and Elena.
Elena looked nervous, her hands clutching her ceramic mug tightly. "Mr. Moretti... I can take Lily back to our cottage now if she’s bothering him—"
"She’s not bothering him, Elena," Adrian said gently, taking a sip of his coffee. "Look at him."
For the first time in months, Bruno’s tail was thumping steadily against the rug. His dark eyes were alert, happy, and entirely free of fear.
Adrian walked over to the patio doors, looking down at the little girl and the huge dog. He knelt down on one knee beside them.
"Lily," Adrian said softly.
The little girl looked up, her dark eyes bright and curious. "Yes, Mr. Adrian?"
Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing a beautiful gold pin shaped like a little ladybug with tiny diamond spots.
"You saved Bruno's life," Adrian said, his dark eyes filled with a rare, profound warmth. "If you hadn't told me about the black car and the man with the shiny ring, I might never have found him."
Lily’s eyes widened in wonder as Adrian carefully pinned the golden ladybug onto the collar of her pink sweater.
"Is it magic?" Lily asked, touching the smooth gold with her tiny finger.
"It means you are under my protection forever," Adrian said gently. "Nobody in this city will ever hurt you or your mother again."
Elena stepped forward, tears welling in her eyes as she heard his words. "Mr. Moretti... I don't know how to thank you."
Adrian stood up, turning to look at the young widow.
Over the past two days, amid the chaos and violence, he had noticed how quiet, dignified, and deeply caring Elena was. While Vivienne had brought greed, lies, and betrayal into his home, Elena had brought warmth, honesty, and a sweet little girl who had saved the only thing Adrian held dear.
"You don't need to thank me, Elena," Adrian said, his voice deep and sincere. "Starting today, your position as maid is finished."
Elena froze, her face going pale. "Mr. Moretti?"
"I am hiring you as the estate’s head house manager," Adrian explained with a soft smile. "Your salary will be quadrupled. You and Lily will move out of the garage cottage and into the east wing suites."
Elena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in shock. "Mr. Moretti... I... I can't accept that—"
"Bruno accepts it," Adrian interrupted, gesturing toward the dog, who let out a loud, contented grunting noise as he leaned his heavy head against Lily’s lap. "And in this house, Bruno gets the final say."
Elena let out a breathless, joyful laugh, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Thank you, Adrian. Thank you."
Adrian looked down at Lily, who was happily rubbing Bruno’s ears, then back at Elena.
