Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper’s Ledger

The heavy oak doors of the study were locked from the inside.

Only four people remained in the room: Damian, Rosa, Clara, and Bruno standing guard by the entrance. On the mahogany desk lay the leather notebook, the recovered memory card, and a printed stack of bank transfer records that Miller had just delivered from the basement.

Rosa Moretti adjusted her reading glasses, scanning the financial trails with an intensity that would have intimidated a Wall Street auditor.

“My god,” Rosa whispered, looking up at Clara. “These records prove that Vanessa wasn't just leaking data—she was systematically draining capital from Moretti Logistics and funneling it into private offshore accounts controlled by Marcus Vance to artificially bankrupt your shipping lanes.”

“And she used her position as your fiancée to bypass internal financial audits,” Clara added calmly, standing on the other side of the desk with her hands folded neatly in front of her. “Whenever the compliance department flagged a discrepancy, Vanessa convinced Damian that it was a routine tax adjustment related to the upcoming wedding expenses.”

Damian stood by the window, staring down at the courtyard where the headlights of arriving vehicles suddenly cut through the darkness.

“Federal marshals,” Bruno reported, peering through the heavy velvet curtains. “Two black SUVs. They’re stopping at the front steps.”

“Let them come,” Damian said, his voice cold and steady. He turned away from the window and fixed his gaze entirely on Clara. “Now we address the elephant in the room. You are not a standard domestic housekeeper, Clara Hayes. No domestic employee spends their evenings analyzing corporate embezzlement trails and offshore trust dissolutions.”

Clara didn't flinch. She took a slow, deep breath, unbuttoning the top button of her sweater as if shedding a heavy weight she had carried for too long.

“My name is not Clara Hayes,” she said quietly. “My real name is Clara Vance-Sterling—no, forgive me. Clara Sterling is my maiden name. I am Clara Vance. Marcus Vance’s younger sister.”

Rosa gasped softly, her hand flying to her chest. Damian’s expression didn't change, but his entire body went rigid, every muscle coiling like a spring.

“Marcus Vance’s sister,” Damian repeated, the words tasting like ash. “The same Marcus Vance who tried to ruin my father and destroy my shipping empire?”

“The exact same one,” Clara said, her voice dropping into a tone of bitter resolve. “Six years ago, my father left the entirety of our family’s shipping legacy to me, believing Marcus lacked the financial discipline to run it. Marcus didn't accept that. He forged our father’s will, pushed me out of the company, froze my assets, and threatened to destroy me if I ever exposed him. I went into hiding, changed my name, and spent two years working my way into the bottom tier of the very corporate households he was trying to infiltrate.”

“You came into my house as a spy,” Damian said, stepping toward her, his shadow falling over her slender frame.

“I came into your house to find proof of his illegal expansion,” Clara corrected, meeting his eyes without a hint of fear. “I knew Marcus was planning to use a proxy—someone close to you—to infiltrate your holding accounts. When Vanessa was introduced as your fiancée six months ago, I knew she was his plant. I was just waiting for the right moment to expose them both.”

“And you used my estate as your chessboard,” Damian said, his voice dangerously low.

“I protected your estate,” Clara fired back, her gray eyes flashing with sudden heat. “If I hadn't moved that portrait tonight, Marcus’s legal team would have seized your entire maritime logistics network by midnight under a false corporate claim. I saved your empire, Mr. Moretti. You’re welcome.”

The silence in the study was absolute. Bruno instinctively placed his hand near his holster, unsure whether his boss was about to draw a weapon or throw the woman out the window.

Instead, a slow, heavy sound filled the room.

Damian Moretti began to laugh.

It wasn't a warm laugh; it was a dark, dangerous, appreciative sound that carried the weight of a man who recognized a true predator when he saw one.

“You spent two years scrubbing toilets and cleaning my floors just to outmaneuver your brother,” Damian said, a dangerous smile touching his lips.

“The floors were immaculate, Mr. Moretti,” Clara replied dryly. “Ask Rosa.”

Rosa Moretti let out a sharp, delighted cackle, slamming her hand against the desk. “I love her! Damian, if you don't marry this girl by sunrise, I am cutting you out of the family will and leaving the entire shipping fleet to her!”
