Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Leonard Carver

While Mara rested in the sunlit luxury of the third-floor guest suite, a storm was brewing in the dark underbelly of Chicago.
In a private cigar lounge overlooking the Chicago River, Leonard Carver sat across from his daughter, Vanessa. Leonard’s face was red with anger, his knuckles white as he gripped his whiskey glass.
“He rejected you,” Leonard snarled, slamming his fist onto the leather table. “He rejected our offer, and he demanded the four million dollars by Friday!”
Vanessa smoothed her red silk dress, her eyes cold and calculating. She was not a broken woman; she was a predator in her own right. “Adrian Vale thinks he’s untouchable because he controls the northern freight routes. But he has a weakness, Father.”
Leonard looked up, narrowing his eyes. “A weakness? The man is a ghost. He doesn't drink, he doesn't gamble, and he hasn't touched a woman since his former fiancée died five years ago.”
“Until now,” Vanessa corrected, pulling a thick brown envelope from her designer purse and sliding it across the table.
Leonard opened the envelope. Inside were high-resolution telephoto photographs taken outside the Vale estate earlier that morning. One photo showed Dr. Mercer arriving at the private entrance. Another showed a young woman in a maid’s uniform standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows of the third-floor suite—a suite that had remained locked and empty for half a decade.
“Who is she?” Leonard asked, his breath catching in his throat.
“Her name is Mara Bennett,” Vanessa said with a cruel, satisfied smile. “A nobody from the South Side. Her father died in debt, her mother is long gone, and she works two jobs to pay for her brother’s kidney dialysis.”
Leonard let out a dark, booming laugh. “The great Adrian Vale... softening for a peasant maid? Is he losing his mind?”
May you like
“Or losing his edge,” Vanessa added coldly. “Adrian refused our alliance. But if we take this girl... we won't just get our four million debt forgiven. We’ll have Adrian Vale on his knees, giving us total control of the northern ports.”
Leonard leaned back in his chair, a menacing grin spreading across his face. “Call our men in the South Side. Find out where her brother receives his dialysis treatment. If Adrian Vale wants to play protector... let’s see how much he’s willing to burn to keep her safe.”
