Chapter 4 - Fire on the Hudson

By eight-thirty in the evening, the sky over the Hudson Valley had turned into a pitch-black expanse covered in heavy storm clouds. A sharp, autumn wind whistled through the ancient oak trees, rattling the dark windows of the estate.

In the driveway, three black, unmarked armored SUVs sat idling in the dark.

The domestic staff had already been evacuated through the rear forest road. Lia and her daughter Mia sat in the back seat of the middle SUV, wrapped in warm blankets, guarded by two of Marco’s most trusted men.

Inside the grand study, Alessandro stood before the massive fireplace.

In his hand, he held a heavy brass key—the key to the secondary ventilation system that controlled the estate’s underground gas lines. Beside him stood Marco, holding a military-grade detonator briefcase.

"All servers wiped, Boss," Marco reported, his voice low and steady. "The men have cleared out the primary armory. Everything of value has been moved to the safehouse in New Jersey. The federals and the Northern Alliance hitmen are going to walk into a completely empty shell."

Alessandro looked around the room one last time.

He looked at the dark walnut beams that had belonged to three generations of Moretti men. He looked at the heavy velvet curtains, the leather-bound ledgers, the portraits of his ancestors. For thirty-eight years, this house had been his fortress, his prison, and his legacy.

He felt no sadness. Only a profound, liberating clarity.

"Where is Carlo?" Alessandro asked.

"Bound and gagged in the security bunker beneath the garage," Marco replied. "When the federals breach the gate, they'll find him waiting for them with a flash drive containing full confessions to every bribe he gave Judge Harrison over the last ten years."

A cold, bitter smile touched Alessandro's lips. Carlo had wanted to use the law to destroy the Moretti family. Instead, he would spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security federal facility, exposed as a rat to both the government and the underworld.

At precisely eight-fifty-five, headlight beams flashed through the trees at the end of the long driveway.

Dozens of vehicles—swat vans, federal cruisers, and dark tactical sedans belonging to the Northern Alliance—breached the outer iron gates, surrounding the estate in a massive perimeter of flashing red and blue lights.

Amplified megaphones echoed across the lawn: "This is the FBI! Alessandro Moretti, step out of the house with your hands visible!"

Alessandro turned the brass key in the fireplace wall.

A heavy, hissing sound echoed deep within the walls as high-pressure natural gas began flooding the lower levels of the house.

"Time to go, Boss," Marco said, holding open the hidden passage door behind the bookshelf that led directly into the underground escape tunnel.

Alessandro took one last look at the study. He tossed his father's silver pocket watch into the center of the mahogany desk, letting its ticking be swallowed by the hissing of the gas.

"Let it burn," Alessandro said.

They stepped into the tunnel, and Marco pressed the red button on the detonator.

A second later, a deafening, thunderous roar shook the earth.

A massive wall of orange fire erupted from the basement of the Moretti estate, blowing the grand stained-glass windows into a million sparkling fragments. The roof collapsed inward with a majestic, catastrophic crash, sending a towering pillar of flame and ash into the night sky over the Hudson River.

The federal agents and Northern Alliance hitmen scrambled backward in pure, chaotic terror as the fortress of the Moretti empire turned into a roaring inferno, consuming fifteen years of treachery, blood, and secrets in a single, magnificent flash of light.
