Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A FRAUD

Within twenty minutes, the private VIP holding lounge on the hotel's penthouse level had been transformed into an interrogation room.
The room was furnished with plush leather sofas and a polished mahogany conference table, but the atmosphere was suffocating. Luca sat at the head of the table, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, his fingers steepened beneath his chin. Sophia had finally fallen asleep on a velvet settee, wrapped in a warm cashmere throw blanket, guarded closely by Dr. Benton.
I sat across from Luca, holding a cup of lukewarm water that one of the hotel managers had nervously brought in.
The heavy oak door swung open.
Marcus Vance rushed into the room, looking disheveled, his expensive silk tie slightly crooked, sweating profusely despite the air conditioning. He had been intercepted near the hotel’s subterranean valet exit before his town car could pull away.
"Luca! Thank God," Marcus babbled, forcing an uneasy, oily smile as he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses. "What is going on down there? The guests are in an absolute uproar! Why did security block the elevators? I have a meeting with the city zoning board in twenty minutes—"
"Shut your mouth, Marcus," Luca said softly.
The quiet command hit the room like a physical shockwave. Marcus froze, swallowing hard as he looked into Luca’s unblinking eyes.
"Do you remember Hannah Carter?" Luca asked, his voice chillingly calm.
Marcus blinked, a micro-expression of sheer panic flashing across his features before he smoothed it over with practiced confusion. "Hannah... Carter? The name doesn't ring a bell, Boss. Is she... is she one of the new banquet coordinators?"
"She is the woman who pulled my daughter out of the sinking wreckage at Ashwood Bridge three years ago," Luca stated, standing up slowly from his chair. He walked around the table until he stood mere inches from Marcus. "The woman whose letters you intercepted. The woman whose phone calls you blocked with forged foundation notices."
"That's... that's completely absurd!" Marcus stammered, his voice pitching upward into a defensive whine. "The river rescue was entirely anonymous! The police report stated the civilian fled the scene before emergency responders arrived! We never knew who—"
"Because you made damn sure no one ever found out," Luca interrupted, his hand dropping casually toward the holster beneath his left arm. "Vincent. Play the archive file from the encrypted server in the foundation basement."
Vincent stepped forward from the doorway, pulling a ruggedized tablet from his coat and tapping the screen.
A tinny, recorded voice echoed through the quiet penthouse lounge—a voice Marcus instantly recognized as his own from three years prior:
“If the Carter woman calls the office again about the reward or wanting to speak directly to Moretti, tell her the police report lists her as a person of interest in the vehicle obstruction. Scare her off. We cannot have anyone looking into the steering mechanism of that SUV. If Moretti finds out the tie rods were intentionally severed before the car went into the river, we’re all finished.”
The room went dead silent.
Marcus’s legs buckled. He dropped heavily to his knees against the Persian rug, clutching his head in his hands as his breath came in ragged, terrified gasps.
"Boss... please," Marcus wept, his aristocratic veneer completely shattered. "It wasn't about the girl! It was about the municipal contracts! If an outside investigation started looking into the vehicle's maintenance logs, they would have traced the financial audit right back to our offshore accounts! I had to protect the syndicate's assets!"
Luca didn't yell. He didn't strike him. He simply reached down, grabbed Marcus by the collar of his silk shirt, and hauled him up to eye level with effortless, terrifying strength.

"You didn't protect the syndicate, Marcus," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, suppressed fury. "You tried to bury my daughter twice. Once in the river, and once in silence."
With a sharp shove, Luca cast Marcus back onto the floor into the arms of the waiting enforcers. "Take him down to the shipping warehouse on Lake Calumet. Lock him in the cold room until I arrive. We're going to have a very long conversation about who helped him cut those tie rods."
