Chapter 1 - THE SHATTERED SEAL

The air in the grand ballroom of the Harbor Lights Grand Hotel was thick with shock. Red wine soaked into the white linen of the head table like blood from a fresh wound, but Luca Moretti did not look down at the stain. His gaze remained locked on my face, sharp and piercing, searching for a ghost he had spent three years mourning.

"An answer?" Luca repeated, his voice dropping into a register so dangerously low that it cut through the murmurs of four hundred stunned guests. "What answer, Hannah?"

"Two weeks after the accident at Ashwood Bridge," I said, my hands still trembling slightly as I kept one arm securely around Sophia, "I received a formal letter on thick, cream-colored stationery bearing the gold seal of the Moretti Foundation. It stated that due to privacy regulations and an ongoing police investigation, any civilian claims regarding the rescue were deemed unverified interference. It warned that further attempts to contact the family or the hospital would be flagged for legal harassment."

Luca’s expression darkened into something terrifying. The muscle in his jaw clenched violently.

"I never authorized that letter," Luca said, his voice flat, edged with a sudden, lethal frost.

"It had your signature stamped at the bottom," I replied, holding his intense, dark eyes. "Or a replica so precise I couldn't tell the difference. After that, when I tried calling the main foundation switchboard, the operators told me you were overseas or that the case file had been permanently sealed by court order."

Dr. Clare Benton, the physical therapist who had knelt beside us, looked up sharply. Her eyes widened as pieces of the puzzle clicked together in her mind. "Mr. Moretti... foundation communications and administrative mail routing have been exclusively managed by Marcus Vance for the past five years. You haven't personally audited the civilian inquiry logs since the initial recovery phase."

Luca’s jaw tightened even further. The realization hit him like a physical blow.

"Marcus," Luca whispered, the name carrying a weight that promised absolute ruin.

Before Luca could call for his security detail, seven-year-old Sophia stirred against my shoulder. Her small fingers tightened into the fabric of my black-and-white uniform.

"Don't let them take me away again, Hannah," Sophia murmured, her voice thick with exhaustion and lingering fear. "I told Daddy every single night that you sang to me while we were in the dark under the water."

I pressed a soft kiss to her forehead, blinking back tears. "I'm not going anywhere, sweetheart. I promise."

Luca slowly stood up from the spilled wine and broken glass, towering over the assembly. He didn't care about the whispers of the elite, the flashing cameras of hidden reporters, or the ruined gala. He cared only about the thread that had just connected his daughter’s survival to the woman standing before him.

"Vincent," Luca called out without turning around.

From the edge of the shattered glass, Luca’s massive chief bodyguard stepped forward instantly, his face a mask of disciplined obedience.

"Boss?"

"Lock down the perimeter of this hotel. Nobody leaves," Luca ordered, his voice echoing across the silent hall. "And bring Marcus Vance to my private office immediately. If he's not in this building, track him down wherever he is hiding. Alive."
