Chapter 6 - A Home Built on Love

One year later.
The summer sun shone brilliantly over the rolling green lawns of the Moretti estate in Westchester. The dark fog of fear that had once hung over the property was entirely gone, replaced by the sounds of children laughing, birds singing, and music floating through the open French doors of the main terrace.
Under the shade of a massive oak tree, a long wooden dining table was set with fresh flowers, silver pitcher drinks, and a magnificent three-tiered vanilla cake.
Ethan, now nine years old, was running across the grass with a golden retriever puppy, laughing as the dog chased his sneakers. Right behind him was four-year-old Lily, wearing a bright yellow sundress, her dark curls bouncing around her blushing cheeks as she tried to catch up.
Near the terrace, Dominic Moretti stood watching them.
He was dressed in a simple white linen shirt and dark trousers, looking years younger than the cold, hardened man who had stood in that same house twelve months earlier. The sharp edges of his voice had softened, and the tension in his shoulders was completely gone.
From behind him, two soft hands wrapped around his waist.
Dominic smiled, turning around to pull Sophia into his arms. She looked stunning in a floral summer dress, her skin glowing, her eyes bright with happiness.
She was no longer the head housekeeper. Six months ago, she had officially taken over as director of the Moretti Children’s Educational Foundation—a charity she and Dominic had built together to fund housing and education for widows and orphans across New York.
"What are you thinking about?" Sophia asked, resting her head against his chest.
"I was thinking about how a broken birthday cake saved my life," Dominic murmured, pressing a sweet kiss to the top of her head.
"Lily still brags about it, you know," Sophia chuckled softly. "She told her preschool teacher yesterday that her daddy is a big boss, but she is the real boss of the house."
Dominic laughed—a rich, booming sound that echoed across the quiet terrace. "She's not wrong."
From the lawn, Ethan and Lily came running toward them.
"Dad! Dad!" Ethan shouted, sliding to a stop on the grass. "Can we cut the cake now? Lily wants the slice with the big sugar flower!"
Dominic looked down at his son, then at Lily, who was looking up at him with wide, hopeful brown eyes.
Dominic dropped down onto one knee—the very same posture he had taken a year ago when his world had been falling apart. But this time, he wasn't looking for poison. He was looking at his family.
He reached out and picked Lily up, placing her comfortably on his hip, while wrapping his other arm around Ethan's shoulders.
"You can have any slice you want, Lily," Dominic said warmly, looking over at Sophia, who walked over to stand right beside them. "Because in this house, you will always be our little hero."
Lily wrapped her tiny arms around Dominic's neck and kissed his cheek. "I love you, Daddy."
Dominic closed his eyes for a moment, absorbing the sound of that word—Daddy—which Lily had started calling him six months ago. It was a title far more powerful than boss, capo, or chairman.

"I love you too, sweetie," Dominic whispered softly.
Together, the four of them walked toward the sunlit table, hand in hand, stepping into a bright, beautiful future built not on fear or shadows, but on absolute love, trust, and family.
