Chapter 2 - The Phantom in the House

The night wore on into the early hours of Monday morning, but no one in the Moretti estate slept.

Outside, the storm raged, battering the high stone walls with wind and hail. Inside, the search was meticulous, silent, and brutal. Every closet, utility duct, security server, and trash compactor was systematically dismantled by Marcus’s team.

Down in the estate’s private medical wing, Ethan lay asleep under a thick duvet, a heart monitor humming softly beside his bed.

Dominic sat in a wooden chair beside the bed, holding his son’s small, pale hand. For eight years, Dominic had built an empire around the single premise of keeping this boy safe. After his wife, Elena, died in a tragic car accident seven years ago—an accident that Dominic had always suspected was sabotage by rival families—Ethan was all he had left.

The door to the medical room opened quietly, and Sophia walked in carrying a tray with two mugs of hot tea and a plate of plain toast.

"I thought you might need something," Sophia said softly, setting the tray down on a small side table. She looked over at Ethan, her expression full of tender concern. "How is he doing?"

"Dr. Harris says the toxin was a synthetic derivative of peanut protein combined with a fast-acting paralytic," Dominic said quietly, his voice hollow with exhaustion. "It was designed to kill him before the ambulance could even reach the front gates."

Sophia gasped, bringing a hand to her mouth. "Who could be so cruel? He's just a child!"

"In my world, Sophia," Dominic said, looking up at her, "a child is not an innocent. A child is an heir. And to my enemies, an heir is a vulnerability."

Sophia sat down in the chair next to him. For six years, she had worked in this house as a ghost—moving silently through the halls, coordinating the maids, organizing the linen closets, ensuring that Dominic Moretti's life ran smoothly without ever speaking to him unless spoken to. But in the quiet of this terrifying night, the boundaries between master and servant had completely dissolved.

"Lily won't leave her room," Sophia said quietly, staring at her tea. "She keeps asking if the mean man with the watch is going to come into her room. I locked the windows, but she's terrified."

Dominic looked at Sophia, noticing for the first time the deep dark circles beneath her warm brown eyes, the stray curls slipping out of her hair tie, and the strength radiating from her fragile frame.

"Your daughter is safe here, Sophia," Dominic said firmly, reaching out and gently placing his hand over hers. His palm was broad, warm, and calloused, a stark contrast to her small, delicate fingers. "I give you my personal word as a Moretti. Nothing will touch either of you."

Sophia looked at his hand, feeling a sudden, unexpected electric spark pass between them. She didn't pull away.

Before either of them could speak, Marcus tapped heavily on the door frame. His face was pale, and his uniform was damp from rain.

"Boss," Marcus said grimly. "We checked everyone. All thirty-four staff members currently locked inside the compound."

Dominic stood up immediately, withdrawing his hand from Sophia's. "And?"

"None of them are wearing the watch," Marcus said. "And none of them have it in their lockers or personal quarters."

Dominic’s jaw set. "Then who entered the cold room?"

"We pulled the security tapes from the service corridor," Marcus continued, pulling an iPad from his coat and handing it to Dominic. "Look at timestamp 16:42. Right before the cake was brought out."

Dominic and Sophia both leaned in to watch the screen.

The video showed the narrow, stainless-steel service hallway leading to the cold room. A figure dressed in a black raincoat and a low baseball cap walked smoothly toward the door, bypassed the electronic keypad using a master keycard, and stepped inside. Two minutes later, the figure emerged, walking quickly toward the rear exit that led to the estate's greenhouse.

As the figure opened the rear exit door, a sudden gust of wind blew rain into the hallway, causing the man to reach up and steady his cap.

For a fraction of a second, his left sleeve pulled back.

A tiny, brilliant glint of gold caught the camera's infrared light.

"Pause it right there," Dominic ordered.

Marcus tapped the screen, zooming in on the man's exposed wrist. There it was—a vintage gold watch with a distinct, octagonal bezel and a dark crocodile strap.

"It's not one of our current staff," Marcus said under his breath. "Boss... that keycard he used was decommissioned three years ago. It belonged to your late wife's brother."

Dominic froze. The air in the medical room seemed to drop to freezing temperatures. "Julian?"

"Julian Vance," Marcus confirmed quietly. "He's been living in exile in Milan since your wife's funeral. But according to customs logs... a passport under his alias entered JFK Airport forty-eight hours ago."
