Chapter 3 - The Wolf at the Gate

The morning arrived with a thick, gray fog rolling in off the East River, wrapping the Moretti mansion in a cold shroud.
At 11:30 AM, three black SUVs pulled out of the mansion’s main gates, their sirens silent, heading toward the commercial docks in Brooklyn. To any observer watching the estate, it appeared that Alessandro Moretti had taken the bait, leaving the mansion guarded by only a skeleton crew of domestic security.
Inside the third-floor suite, I stood near the window, holding Emma’s hand tightly.
Down in the courtyard below, two unmarked delivery vans pulled up to the service entrance. Six men in navy coveralls stepped out, carrying heavy toolboxes. To a casual eye, they looked like maintenance workers responding to a plumbing call.
In reality, they were Vittorio Moretti’s elite enforcement squad.
"Mama," Emma whispered, tugging at my dress. "Where is the nice boss man?"
"He’s nearby, sweetie," I murmured, brushing her curls back. "Stay close to me."
Downstairs, the heavy iron service doors clicked open.
The six men slipped inside the lower hallway, their boots silent on the marble tile. The leader—a scarred man named Lorenzo who had served as Vittorio’s chief enforcer for a decade—drew a suppressed pistol from beneath his jacket.
"Clear the staff rooms," Lorenzo whispered to his men. "Find the maid’s child in the east wing. Bring her to the van. If the mother gets in the way, eliminate her."
They moved down the quiet corridor toward the laundry room.
The house was deathly silent. No vacuum hummed; no china clinked in the kitchen.
Lorenzo reached the laundry room doorway, pushing the door open with the barrel of his gun.
The room was empty save for a single item sitting in the middle of the floor.
A wooden stool. On top of the stool sat a porcelain basin full of cold water, and resting inside the basin was Alessandro’s white shirt—the coffee stain still visible on the collar.
Lorenzo frowned, stepping into the room. "What is this?"
Before his men could answer, the heavy steel security doors at both ends of the service hallway slammed shut with a deafening, pneumatic thud.
The lights in the hallway went pitch black.
A second later, red emergency lamps flooded the corridor in a dim, blood-colored glow.
From the shadow behind the industrial dryers stepped Alessandro Moretti.
He didn't wear a tactical vest. He didn't carry a rifle. He wore a crisp dark suit, his hands folded calmly behind his back, his dark eyes fixed on Lorenzo with a terrifying, predatory calm.
Behind him stood Marcus and eight heavily armed Moretti guards, their laser sights painting bright red dots across the chests of Vittorio’s six men.
"Looking for my shirt, Lorenzo?" Alessandro asked, his voice echoing in the confined space like thunder.
Lorenzo’s face drained of all color. He raised his weapon, but before his finger could squeeze the trigger, Alessandro moved with lethal efficiency.
In a split second, Alessandro stepped forward, grabbing Lorenzo’s wrist and snapping it downward with a sharp, sickening crack. The suppressed pistol clattered to the floor. Alessandro struck him twice in the throat and chest, sending the seasoned enforcer crashing heavily against the tiled wall.
The remaining five men dropped their weapons instantly, raising their hands into the air as Marcus’s team moved in, pinning them to the floor.
Alessandro stood over Lorenzo, dusting off the cuffs of his dark jacket. He reached down, pulled a satellite phone from Lorenzo’s jacket pocket, and dialed a pre-programmed number.
He placed the phone to his ear, listening to it ring twice before a raspy, elderly voice answered.
"Lorenzo?" Vittorio’s voice came through the speaker. "Do you have the girl?"
Alessandro smiled—a dark, brilliant, terrifying smile.
"She’s safe in my arms, Uncle," Alessandro said softly into the receiver. "And your men are currently lying on my laundry room floor."

Silence deadened the line.
"I’m coming for your harbor, Vittorio," Alessandro added quietly. "Have your lawyers ready by three o'clock."
