Chapter 7 - THE ABDUCTION AT THE PARKThe next afternoon at 3:15 PM, the sky over St. Jude’s Elementary School was overcast and gray.

Eight-year-old Isabella sat on a wooden park bench just outside the school gates, wearing her warm navy coat and a yellow knitted hat that her mother had bought her with her new salary.

Fifty yards away, sitting in an unmarked black sedan, were two of Vincent Torino’s trusted guards, watching the perimeter with sharp, vigilant eyes.

Isabella pulled a small drawing pad from her backpack, using a set of colored pencils to sketch a picture of the Torino mansion’s kitchen—complete with a large skillet, a golden grilled cheese sandwich, and a tall man with silver hair wearing a dark suit.

Suddenly, a voice called out from behind the park bushes.

"Isabella?"

The little girl looked up.

Stepping out from behind the hedge was Arthur Pendelton. He wore a heavy trench coat and a hat pulled low over his eyes, looking nervous and sweating despite the cool breeze.

"Mr. Pendelton?" Isabella blinked, recognizing the former estate manager.

"Isabella, thank goodness I found you," Pendelton stammered, putting on a fake, urgent expression. "Your mommy... she had a relapse at the hospital. Mr. Torino sent me to bring you to her right away."

Isabella froze, her small hands clutching her drawing pad tightly. "Mommy is sick again?"

"Yes! Very sick!" Pendelton lied, stepping closer and reaching for her arm. "The guards over there don't know yet—Mr. Torino didn't want to cause a panic. Come with me to my car, quickly!"

Isabella looked toward the black sedan fifty yards away. She remembered what Vincent had told her three days ago: Never go anywhere without Marco or the guards I assigned to you.

"I... I should tell the guards first," Isabella said, taking a step backward.

"There's no time!" Pendelton yelled, losing his composure and grabbing her wrist tightly.

"Let go of me!" Isabella shrieked, kicking out with her sneaker.

Before the guards in the sedan could realize what was happening, a rusted silver van pulled up to the curb with its side door sliding open. Two masked men lunged out, grabbed Isabella by her arms, and hauled her into the back of the vehicle.

Pendelton scrambled into the passenger seat, and the van sped away, tires screeching against the asphalt.

The two Torino guards bolted out of their sedan, weapons drawn, but the van was already swerving through traffic, disappearing into the city grid.

Ten minutes later, the phone on Vincent Torino’s executive desk rang.

Vincent answered it on the second ring. "Speak."

"Boss..." the lead guard’s voice was trembling so violently he could barely articulate the words. "They took her. A silver van... they grabbed Isabella at the park."

Vincent Torino did not shout. He did not slam his fist onto the desk.

An eerie, absolute silence fell over the executive suite. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second.

Marco Bellini, standing near the door, saw Vincent’s face go completely blank—a look he had only seen once before, fifteen years ago, during the bloody purge that had established Vincent’s absolute control over the city.

Vincent slowly set the phone down.

"Lock down every exit in the city," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Call every capo, every soldier, every informant from the docks to the suburbs."

Marco drew his weapon, his eyes burning with cold rage. "Who took her, Boss?"

"Leo Moretti," Vincent said, standing up and pulling his heavy black overcoat from the coat rack. "And he has fifteen minutes left to live."
