Chapter 6 - THE HEIRLOOM AND THE SUNLIGHT

One year later.
The private garden of the Moretti estate was transformed into a paradise of white orchids, trailing ivy, and glowing crystal lanterns suspended from the ancient oak trees.
The ocean-like vastness of Lake Michigan shimmered under a warm, perfect summer sun.
Sitting in the white iron chairs set up on the lawn were two hundred guests—not shadowy syndicate bosses or corrupt politicians, but leading surgeons from across the country, clean business partners, dock workers' families, and devoted staff members.
Sitting in the front row was Eleanor Moretti, wearing a stunning lavender silk dress, holding a lace handkerchief, tears of pure joy streaming down her face. Beside her sat Walter Bell and Dr. Mercer, both looking proud and elegant in their tuxedos.
At the altar, standing under a massive archway of white roses, was Dominic.
He looked extraordinarily handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, his posture tall, proud, and commanding. Standing beside him as best man was Frank, who looked uncharacteristically emotional as he adjusted his own bowtie.
The soft, angelic notes of a string quartet echoed across the gardens.
The crowd stood up.
Walking down the aisle, holding a small basket of pink rose petals, was a tiny six-year-old girl—a former patient from Hannah’s cardiac research center whose life had been saved by the Vance gene therapy three months ago. She tossed petals onto the white carpet with immense delight.
And then came Hannah.
A collective gasp echoed through the gathered guests.
She was breathtaking beyond words.
She wore a custom off-the-shoulder gown of delicate French lace and liquid silk that swept gracefully across the grass as she walked. Her dark hair was styled in soft, cascading waves held back by a silver tiara.
And resting against her collarbone, shining brilliantly under the summer sun in flashes of deep green and blinding light, was the black pearl and emerald Moretti heirloom necklace.
She walked down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Mercer, who had stepped in to proudly walk his late friend’s daughter toward her future.
Her dark eyes were locked directly onto Dominic.
As she reached the altar, Dr. Mercer placed her hand gently into Dominic’s large, warm palm.
"Take care of her, son," Mercer murmured, his voice thick with emotion.
"With my life, Doctor," Dominic answered firmly.
Dominic led Hannah up the three stone steps of the altar.
They stood facing each other under the arch of white roses, holding both hands, looking into each other's eyes with a love so deep and eternal it filled the entire garden with warmth.
The priest stepped forward, his voice carrying clearly over the gentle rustle of the summer leaves.
"We are gathered here today," the priest began, "to unite in holy matrimony two souls who found light in the deepest darkness, who proved that love, justice, and truth are stronger than any shadow."
When the time came for the exchange of vows, Dominic looked directly into Hannah’s eyes, his voice deep, rich, and vibrating with absolute devotion.
"Hannah," Dominic said, sliding a band of flawless white diamonds onto her finger. "Two years ago, you walked into my home carrying a debt of blood that my family owed you. I thought I could protect you with my power. But the truth is... you saved me. You brought light back into a house that had been cold for thirty years. I promise to honor you, to stand beside you as your shield and your partner, and to love you through every storm and every sunrise for the rest of my days."
Tears of joy spilled over Hannah’s lashes, catching the sunlight like tiny diamonds.
She slid a heavy platinum band onto Dominic’s finger, her voice clear, brave, and ringing with pure happiness.
"Dominic," she whispered, her hands holding his tightly. "When my world was destroyed, I thought I would spend the rest of my life running in the dark. But you showed me that true strength isn't found in fear—it's found in love. You cleared my father's name, you protected my soul, and you gave me a home where I can finally heal. I give you my heart, my life, and my eternal love."
"By the authority vested in me," the priest declared with a broad, beaming smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Dominic, you may kiss your bride."
Dominic didn't hesitate for a single second.
He stepped forward, wrapping his powerful arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet, and pulled her into a deep, passionate, magnificent kiss that brought the entire audience to their feet in a thunderous, roaring ovation!
Eleanor clapped her hands joyfully, wiping her eyes, while Frank and Walter cheered loudly from the side.
Dominic set Hannah down slowly, his face illuminated by a massive, breathtaking smile—a smile so genuine, so full of pure, unrestrained happiness that no one on the docks of Chicago would have ever recognized the former cold Mafia boss.
He took his wife's hand, lacing their fingers together, and led her down the aisle toward the path overlooking the sparkling lake.
The sun shone brightly over Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant, golden light over the new estate, over the hospital that would heal thousands of hearts, and over the two souls who had turned an ancient debt of blood into an eternal promise of love.
