Chapter 5 - THE DOCKS AT SUNSET

Six months later.

The South Side docks of Chicago were bustling with activity under the golden light of an early autumn sunset. Massive container ships rested against the piers, their steel hulls painted with the dark blue logo of Moretti International Shipping.

Dock workers in high-visibility vests moved around the cranes, shouting orders and guiding cargo onto freight trains.

Standing on the high wooden pier overlooking the harbor was Dominic.

He was wearing a long charcoal overcoat against the crisp autumn breeze, his hands tucked deep into his pockets as he watched his shipping empire operate with absolute, flawless efficiency.

Behind him, soft footsteps approached over the wooden planks.

Dominic didn't need to turn around to know who it was. The subtle, clean scent of lavender and fresh autumn air told him everything.

Hannah stepped up beside him, wrapping her arms around her own woolen coat to ward off the breeze. She looked radiant. Her hair was down, blowing softly in the wind, her face flushed with health and happiness.

Over the last six months, she had taken full command of the Vance Cardiac Research Center in Chicago. Her groundbreaking clinical trials had already saved fifty patients with end-stage heart failure, making national news across the medical community.

"You shouldn't be out here without a scarfs, Dominic," Hannah said playfully, leaning against his arm. "The lake wind is forty-five degrees today."

"I like the cold," Dominic smiled down at her, pulling one hand out of his pocket and wrapping his heavy arm around her shoulders, tucking her against his warm side. "It keeps me awake."

"How are the docks?" she asked, looking out at the massive container ships.

"Clean," Dominic said, his voice rich with satisfaction. "The last of Marcus's illegal smuggling networks was dismantled last month. Every ship that enters this harbor under my name carries legitimate cargo—pharmaceuticals, grain, steel. The Moretti family is completely out of the shadows."

Hannah looked up at him, her dark eyes filled with deep admiration.

She knew how hard it had been for him to restructure a century-old syndicate into a legitimate corporate empire. He had fought off rogue lieutenants, negotiated with federal authorities, and completely cleaned his family's reputation—all while ensuring every person under his protection remained safe.

"My father would have respected you, Dominic," Hannah said quietly, her voice sincere. "He always believed that real power isn't about controlling people through fear. It's about building something that protects those who can't protect themselves."

Dominic looked out over the deep blue water of Lake Michigan, the setting sun casting brilliant orange and violet light across the waves.

"I spent thirty-five years thinking power was a weapon," Dominic admitted softly, his hand gently squeezing her shoulder. "I thought if I was ruthless enough, if I controlled enough territory, no one could ever hurt my family again. But the night I found you in that pantry... wrapping your own bleeding wrist with steady hands... I realized something."

He turned to face her fully, his dark, handsome face illuminated by the golden rays of the sunset.

"Real strength," Dominic whispered, reaching out to tuck a strand of dark hair behind her ear, "is having the courage to protect others even when your own world is burning down. You taught me that, Hannah."

Hannah’s heart gave a sudden, glorious leap in her chest.

She reached up, taking his large, warm hand in hers, lacing their fingers together tightly against the chilly wind.

"I love you, Dominic," she whispered, saying the words aloud for the first time.

Dominic’s breath caught. His dark eyes softened with an emotion so intense, so profound, it shattered every remaining wall around his heart.

He leaned down, framing her face with both hands, and pressed his lips against hers in a deep, magnificent kiss that tasted of sweet autumn wind and sea salt.

Hannah wrapped her arms around his neck, standing on her tiptoes, surrendering completely to the warmth and safety of his embrace while the cranes hummed and the sea gulls soared high above the golden harbor.
