Chapter 5 - The Standoff on the Terrace

The third-floor corridor was filled with dense, acrid smoke.

Adrian kicked open the heavy double doors of the private suite, his gun raised, his eyes scanning the room.

The living area was in ruins. Mrs. Whitfield lay unconscious near the sofa, a bloody bump on her forehead, but she was breathing.

Mia was gone.

"Mia!" Elena shrieked, running toward her daughter’s bedroom. "Mia!"

A cold voice rang out from the outdoor balcony terrace. "She can't hear you, Miss Carter."

Adrian rounded the corner, pushing Elena behind him.

Standing on the moonlit balcony, near the low stone balustrade, was a masked Falcone enforcer. He was holding three-year-old Mia under one arm. The little girl was crying hysterically, clutching her brown teddy bear, her tiny feet dangling over the three-story drop into the rose gardens below.

Standing beside the enforcer, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at Adrian’s heart, was Salvatore Rizzi.

Elena let out a choked, horrific gasp. "Salvatore... why? Please! She’s just a baby!"

Adrian didn't look surprised. His eyes were cold, dead, and lethal. "I suspected you for weeks, Salvatore. But I wanted to give you the benefit of thirty years of loyalty."

Salvatore laughed—a bitter, hollow sound. "Loyalty? To what, Adrian? To a boy I saved from a burning car, who grew up to throw his empire away for a housemaid and her bastard child?"

"She is my family!" Adrian snarled, his grip on his weapon rock-solid. "You betrayed your Don, Salvatore."

"You betrayed yourself!" Salvatore yelled back, his eyes wild with greed and anger. "Look at you! Standing here in an emerald-draped room, risking everything for a servant! The Falcone family is downstairs. The council knows you failed to protect this house. You are done, Adrian. Drop your weapon, or he drops the girl over the balcony."

Mia sobbed violently. "Mommy! Mommy, help me!"

"Mia, look at me!" Adrian commanded, his voice cutting through the little girl’s terror with absolute, steady authority. "Mia! Look at Adrian!"

The little girl turned her tear-streaked face toward him.

"Hold your teddy bear tight," Adrian said softly, his tone shifting into the gentle, calm voice he used when reading to her. "Close your eyes, and do not open them until I tell you to."

Mia buried her face into the brown teddy bear and squeezed her eyes shut.

"Now, Salvatore," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave into pure, unadulterated death. "You forgot one thing about me."

Salvatore’s brow furrowed. "What?"

"I never come alone."

A sudden, high-caliber gunshot shattered the night air.

BANG.

The Falcone enforcer holding Mia collapsed instantly as a sniper bullet from Dominic Russo, positioned on the opposite roof, struck him cleanly through the shoulder.

As the enforcer stumbled backward, dropping Mia, Adrian moved like a thunderbolt.

He covered the distance across the balcony in less than a second. He dove forward, catching Mia by her pink dress just as she slipped over the stone edge, pulling her back onto the concrete floor and wrapping his body around her as a human shield.

Salvatore swung his pistol toward Adrian’s exposed back. "Die, traitor—"

BANG. BANG.

Two shots echoed across the terrace.

Salvatore froze. He looked down at his own chest, where two neat red holes were blooming across his white dress shirt.

Behind him stood Elena.

She was holding the silver revolver Adrian had given her for protection weeks ago, her hands shaking violently, her eyes blazing with the ferocious, terrifying instinct of a mother protecting her child.

Salvatore stumbled backward, his eyes wide with disbelief, before falling over the stone balustrade, plunging three stories down into the dark rose gardens below.

Silence reclaimed the night.

The smoke began to clear. Adrian sat up on the balcony floor, cradling Mia tightly against his chest. The little girl had her arms wrapped around his neck, weeping softly, her small face buried in his tuxedo lapel.

Elena dropped the gun, collapsing to her knees beside them, wrapping her arms around both of them, sobbing uncontrollably.

Adrian pulled Elena close, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, her lips, holding his family in a fierce, unbreakable embrace while the sirens of the arriving police and Moretti reinforcements wailed in the distance.

"It's over," Adrian whispered, his voice shaking with deep, emotional relief. "It's over, my love. You are safe. I have you."

Mia pulled her face away from his jacket, looking up at Adrian through her tear-stained eyelashes. Her little hand reached up, touching his cheek.

"Did... did you defeat the bad man?" she whimpered.

May you like

Adrian looked down at the child who had restored his humanity, his eyes shining with tears.

"Yes, Mia," Adrian promised gently. "The bad men are gone forever."
