Chapter 4 - The Gala and the Trap

The night of the annual Moretti Foundation Charity Gala arrived with magnificent grandeur.
The estate was illuminated by thousands of twinkling fairy lights draped through the trees. The grand ballroom was packed with Manhattan’s elite—politicians, judges, wealthy donors, and senior syndicate members, all wearing black-tie attire and sipping expensive champagne.
Elena stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, looking like a vision of pure elegance.
Adrian had personally selected her dress—a sweeping emerald-green velvet gown that hugged her slender waist and complemented her dark hair, which was styled in an intricate updo secured with pearl pins. Around her neck rested a simple, breathtaking diamond necklace from the Moretti estate vault.
Beside her, Mia wore a tiny ivory princess dress with a silver bow, her dark curls bouncing as she looked down at the bustling crowd with wide, excited eyes.
Adrian stepped up behind them, looking impossibly handsome in a custom black tuxedo. He slid his arm around Elena’s waist, pulling her close to his side, completely unbothered by the quiet gasps and whispers circulating among the high-society guests below.
"You look stunning, my love," Adrian whispered into her ear, kissing her cheek softly.
"I feel like I'm dreaming," Elena admitted, resting her hand on his chest. "Are you sure it's okay for us to be here? The council members are staring."
"Let them stare," Adrian said, his voice cold with absolute authority. "Tonight, I am introducing the woman I intend to marry to the world. They will learn to respect you, or they will answer to me."
Elena’s heart leaped. Marry. He had said it so casually, yet with such absolute certainty.
Down on the main floor, Salvatore Rizzi stood near the mahogany bar, watching the family cluster at the top of the stairs. His face was a mask of stone, but inside, his blood was boiling. Adrian wasn't just entertaining a mistress; he was preparing to make a common maid the matriarch of the Moretti empire.
Salvatore tapped his heavy gold watch—a signal to his conspirators stationed at the northern perimeter wall.
At 9:30 p.m., as the orchestra began playing a soft waltz, Mrs. Whitfield approached Elena at the edge of the ballroom.
"Miss Elena," Mrs. Whitfield whispered respectfully. "Mia is getting sleepy. I can take her up to her room and put her to bed so you can enjoy the rest of the evening with Mr. Moretti."
Elena looked down at Mia, who was indeed rubbing her eyes and clinging tightly to her teddy bear.
"Thank you, Mrs. Whitfield," Elena said gratefully. She knelt down and kissed Mia’s forehead. "Go with Mrs. Whitfield, sweetie. Mommy will be up to check on you in a little while."
"Okay, Mommy," Mia mumbled, taking the head housekeeper’s hand. "Goodnight, scary-nice man."
Adrian chuckled, kneeling down to ruffle her dark curls. "Goodnight, little judge. Sleep well."
As Mrs. Whitfield led Mia away toward the private elevator, Adrian took Elena’s hand, leading her onto the dance floor. For thirty glorious, magical minutes, Elena forgot about the syndicate, forgot about her past, and surrendered completely to the music and the warm, intense love in Adrian’s eyes.
Then, the lights went out.
A sudden, violent explosion rocked the eastern wing of the mansion.
Glass shattered across the ballroom as screaming guests scrambled for the exits. Emergency red backup lights flickered on, casting blood-colored shadows across the vast hall.
In an instant, Adrian’s security detail moved into action, drawing concealed weapons and forming a protective perimeter around the Don.
"Dominic!" Adrian shouted over the chaos, pulling Elena behind his back. "Report!"
Dominic Russo sprinted over, his radio buzzing violently. "Boss! The eastern perimeter fence was breached! Explosives hit the main power junction! It’s an armed team!"
Elena’s face drained of color. Her voice rose into a frantic scream. "Mia! Mia is on the third floor!"
Salvatore stepped forward from the shadows, his face grim. "Adrian, you must stay here! The security team will escort you to the underground bunker! You cannot risk your life for a child during an active attack!"
"Out of my way, Salvatore!" Adrian roared, shoving his lieutenant aside with terrifying force.

He pulled a sleek 9mm pistol from his inner jacket lining, grabbed Elena’s hand, and bolted toward the private stairwell, his heart pounding with a visceral, burning terror he hadn't felt since he was eleven years old.
Not again, Adrian thought, his teeth grinding together as he sprinted up the stairs two at a time. I will not lose them again.
