Chapter 10 - The Fine Print of Forever

That evening, The Calabrese Room was closed entirely to the public once again.

There were no corporate thugs, no hostile lawyers, and no federal judges. Just warm amber lighting, soft jazz playing from the antique speakers, and a single table set in the private rear alcove where it all had begun.

Clara sat at the center of the table, wearing a sparkly pink dress, happily eating a massive bowl of spaghetti with a giant chocolate sundae waiting patiently beside it.

Across from her sat Adriano Moretti, wearing a simple black cashmere sweater instead of his usual three-piece suit, patiently listening as Clara explained the intricate geopolitical plot of her favorite cartoon.

I stood by the velvet drapes for a moment, watching them. The sunlight filtering through the stained glass windows caught the edges of the room, turning the old restaurant into a sanctuary of warmth and light.

My life had completely transformed. The broken kitchen table, the unpaid water bills, the suffocating fear of a bitter divorce—all of it belonged to a different lifetime. I was no longer a casualty of someone else's legal manipulation. I was a survivor, a mother, a brilliant attorney, and a partner to a man who valued my mind above all else.

Adriano looked up, his gray eyes finding mine across the room. He excused himself from Clara’s intense debate about cartoon physics, stood up, and walked over to where I was standing.

"You're standing by the drapes again," Adriano noted softly, stopping just inches away.

"I was just thinking about the night we met," I admitted, a small smile playing on my lips. "If my sitter hadn't canceled... if Clara hadn't wandered over..."

"Then I would have signed a very bad contract and spent the next five years fighting a legal war I didn't see coming," Adriano interrupted, his voice dropping into that warm, resonant baritone that always made my heart skip a beat. "Instead, the universe sent me a six-year-old girl with pink sneakers to save my business, and her brilliant mother to save my life."

He reached into the pocket of his sweater and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box.

My breath caught in my throat.

"Adriano..." I whispered.

"Wait," he murmured gently, opening the box to reveal a stunning, custom-designed platinum ring featuring a unique, brilliant-cut diamond flanked by two smaller sapphires. "Before you say anything, you should know that I drafted this agreement myself."

I laughed, a warm, genuine sound bubbling up from my chest. "You drafted a contract for a proposal?"

"Of course," Adriano smiled, his gray eyes crinkling at the corners. "Clause One: You agree to stay with me in this life and the next. Clause Two: We share all future battles, victories, and bowls of ice cream with Clara. Clause Three: There is no expiration date, and no exit clause."

He dropped smoothly to one knee on the polished wooden floor of the restaurant.

From across the table, Clara stopped eating her chocolate sundae, her eyes going wide as saucers. "Mommy! Is Mr. Moretti tying his shoe?"

"No, sweetheart," I whispered, tears of pure joy prickling behind my eyelids as I looked down at the man who had given us back our world. "He's reading the final contract."

Adriano looked up at me, his gaze steady, fierce, and entirely devoted. "Helena Sloan... will you sign for the rest of your life?"

May you like

"Yes," I choked out, a bright, radiant smile breaking across my face. "Yes, I will."

As Adriano slid the ring onto my finger and stood up to pull me into his arms, the restaurant filled with laughter, warmth, and the absolute certainty of a future written together. We didn't need to check the fine print anymore. The terms were set, the love was absolute, and the rest of our story was finally, beautifully ours.
