Chapter 3 - The Gathering of the Wolves

By eight o'clock that evening, the storm that had been brewing off the coast of Long Island had fully arrived. Heavy rain lashed against the tall stained-glass windows of the Bellucci estate, and thunder echoed across the dark waters of Oyster Bay.

In the grand library on the main floor, five men sat in leather armchairs around a roaring fireplace.

These were the captains of the Bellucci empire—men who controlled the docks, the transport networks, the labor unions, and the private security firms across three states. At the center sat Marcus Vale, pouring himself a glass of twenty-year-old scotch with a steady, relaxed hand.

The door opened, and Adrian stepped into the room.

He had changed out of his wedding tuxedo into a dark charcoal suit, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He looked tired, but his posture was completely erect, his dark eyes calm and unreadable.

Every captain in the room stood up out of respect.

“Sit down, gentlemen,” Adrian said, waving a hand casually as he walked over to the mantelpiece.

Marcus stood up, his face painted with an expression of deep, sympathetic regret. “Adrian. We were just waiting for you. Dominic told us you spent the last two hours upstairs.”

“I did,” Adrian replied, watching the flames crackle in the fireplace.

“Did she confess?” Marcus asked, keeping his voice low, almost conspiratorial. “Vance finished analyzing the digital breadcrumbs from her tablet. The money transferred from the holding account went directly to a bank in Nassau. We’ve already contacted our financial contacts to freeze it, but... the betrayal is clear, Adrian. She was working with an outside party to dismantle your assets before the marriage was legalized.”

One of the senior captains, a broad-shouldered man named Tony Varga, growled softly. “We kill her, Adrian. It’s the law of the family. No one touches the books. No one leaks to outsiders.”

Adrian turned around slowly, resting his arm on the marble mantel. “Tony, Claire is an outsider who doesn't know a server from a sandwich. You honestly believe she executed an offshore wire transfer using a zero-day exploit on our encrypted network?”

Marcus stepped forward smoothly, taking a small drink of his scotch. “Adrian, love makes us blind. She is David Harlan’s daughter. She has held a grudge against this family since the day her father died on that bridge site. She used her position to get close to you. It’s painful, but we have to be realistic. We must deal with her before the federal prosecutors get wind of whatever she managed to copy.”

Adrian looked at Marcus. For fifteen years, he had trusted this man with his life, his finances, and his father’s legacy. Looking at him now, Adrian saw only the hollow, parasitic greed that had been festering beneath the polished suits and smooth words.

“You’re right, Marcus,” Adrian said pleasantly. “We must deal with this before the feds get involved.”

Marcus blinked, slightly surprised by Adrian’s quick agreement. “So... you want me to arrange the transport? We can move her to the quiet house in upstate New York until we retrieve the stolen data.”

“No,” Adrian said softly. “I have a better idea. Tomorrow morning at ten A.M., we are holding a full commission meeting right here in this room.”

The captains looked at each other in surprise.

“A commission meeting?” Tony Varga asked. “For a domestic security breach?”

“Not just for a security breach, Tony,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on the back of Marcus’s neck stand up. “For the entire future of the Bellucci organization. I am going to lay out every piece of evidence regarding the holding accounts, the harbor bridge records, and David Harlan’s death.”

Marcus’s hand tightened almost imperceptibly around his whiskey glass. “Adrian... is that wise? Opening up old structural files from your father’s era might invite unnecessary scrutiny from the commission.”

“My father is dead, Marcus,” Adrian said, looking directly into Marcus’s eyes. “He can’t be prosecuted. But the living... the living are another story entirely.”

Adrian walked toward the library door, stopping just beside Marcus. He clapped a heavy, warm hand on Marcus’s shoulder.

“I need you here early tomorrow, Marcus,” Adrian whispered softly. “You’ve always been my sharpest advisor. I need you right beside me when we reveal who was really behind the rose garden meetings.”

Marcus forced a warm, loyal smile onto his face. “I’ll be here at eight A.M., Adrian. You can count on me. Always.”

“I know I can,” Adrian said.

He walked out of the room, closing the heavy oak door behind him.

In the hallway, Dominic Russo stepped out from the shadow of a marble pillar.

“Is everything in place?” Adrian asked quietly.

“Vance is currently packing a bag in his office,” Dominic whispered. “He thinks he’s flying to Costa Rica on Marcus’s private jet at midnight.”

Adrian’s expression turned into a mask of cold, terrifying authority. “Interception team?”

“Stationed at the private airfield in Teterboro,” Dominic confirmed. “They’ll take Vance the moment he steps out of his car. He won't make it to Costa Rica.”

“Good,” Adrian said, looking up toward the top floor where Claire was safe. “Tell Vance that if he wants to live to see his thirty-fifth birthday, he’d better have every decryption key Marcus ever gave him ready for tomorrow morning’s presentation.”
