Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Sunflower FieldsThat evening, as the sun began to dip beneath the red rocks of the Scottsdale horizon, the Whitmore estate was alive with joy.

Frank Vance sat at the head of the patio table, telling hilarious stories about his retired FBI days while eating a second helping of Maria’s famous roasted chicken. Clara sat beside Emma, helping her draw pictures of sunflowers in a new sketchbook.
After dinner, Emma took Richard’s hand, pulling him gently toward the rear garden.
"Come look, Mr. Richard," she whispered excitedly. "The flowers came out today!"
Richard followed her down the stone path leading to the newly planted field behind the house. Earlier that spring, Richard had ordered three acres of the estate grounds plowed and seeded with wild sunflowers—Arthur Whitmore’s favorite flower.
Now, thousands of massive golden blossoms stood tall against the purple evening sky, nodding gently in the warm Arizona breeze.
Emma ran into the middle of the path, spinning around with her arms wide open, her laughter ringing through the quiet air like silver bells.
Richard stood at the edge of the field, watching her with a deep, profound sense of peace resting in his soul. He pulled his wallet from his coat pocket, opening it to a small, worn photograph of Arthur holding Emma as a toddler.
"We did it, Arthur," Richard whispered to the wind. "She’s safe. She’s happy. She’s home."
Emma ran back to Richard, her small hands holding a massive, bright yellow sunflower she had picked from the stalk. She held it up to him, her brown eyes shining with pure, untainted love.
"This one is for you, Mr. Richard," she said softly.
Richard took the flower, kneeling down on the grass beside her. "Thank you, sweetheart. It’s the most beautiful flower I’ve ever seen."
Emma leaned forward, wrapping her small, warm arms around Richard’s neck, pressing her face into his shoulder.
"I love you, Mr. Richard," she whispered. "Thank you for finding me in the dark."

Richard wrapped his arms around her, holding her close, feeling the steady, healthy heartbeat of his late friend’s daughter against his chest.
"I will always find you, Emma," Richard promised, tears of pure joy slipping down his face. "Always."
