Chapter 4 - The Maid’s ConfessionAt six o'clock the following evening, Frank Vance pushed open the door to Richard’s private conference room. He tossed a thick manila folder onto the mahogany table.

"You were right about Dr. Thorne," Frank said, pulling out a chair and sitting down. "The guy is up to his neck in gambling debt at illegal casinos in Vegas. Vanessa Whitmore paid off four hundred thousand dollars of his markers three months ago. In exchange, Thorne signed off on seven different medical evaluations claiming Emma Whitmore suffers from a rare juvenile auto-immune gastrointestinal disorder."

Richard flipped through the documents, his face darkening with every line. "Has he prescribed anything?"

"Steroids and strong sedatives," Frank spat. "Drugs that suppress appetite and cause bone density loss. But that’s not the worst of it, Richard."

Frank pulled out a second set of photos. They were taken covertly behind a grocery store in North Phoenix. They showed a young woman in a maid’s uniform, crying frantically into a paper napkin while speaking to one of Frank’s operatives.

"Her name is Maria," Frank explained. "She was hired three months ago to clean the east wing of the Whitmore estate. She tried to quit twice, but Vanessa threatened to have her undocumented mother deported if she left or spoke to the police."

Richard reached for the audio recorder sitting beside the folder. "Did she talk?"

"Hit play," Frank said.

Richard pressed the silver button. Maria’s trembling, tear-choked voice filled the silent room:

"Mrs. Whitmore... she is a monster. She locks little Emma in the storage basement beneath the pantry—the old wine cellar with no windows. Sometimes for two days if the girl asks for extra food or cries about her father. She gives her only bread and water. When the girl faints from weakness, Mrs. Whitmore calls Dr. Thorne to give her injections so she wakes up again. She tells the girl that if she eats normal food, her stomach will explode because she is sick. The poor baby believes her! She thinks she’s broken!"

Richard pressed pause. The silence in the conference room was heavy enough to crush steel.

Richard slowly stood up, walking over to the window looking out over the Phoenix skyline. His hands were steady now, his mind cleared of all doubt, replaced by a cold, calculating rage.

"Can we use Maria’s testimony to get an emergency CPS removal order?" Richard asked.

"Not immediately," Frank admitted grimly. "Vanessa’s lawyers have high-level connections in the Maricopa County Family Court. The moment you file an emergency petition, Dr. Thorne will produce those falsified medical records proving Emma is under specialized care for a pre-existing condition. They’ll accuse Maria of being a disgruntled employee stealing silver, and Vanessa will move Emma to a private facility out of state before the judge even signs the order."

"Then we don't go through Family Court," Richard said, turning back to face Frank. "We go through the trust."

"What’s the move?"

"Vanessa wants her monthly stipend increased on Friday," Richard said, his eyes narrowing into two sharp slits of steel. "I’m going to invite her to my office to sign the authorization. While she’s here believing she’s securing her millions, you and Maria are going into that house to pull Emma out."

"That’s child abduction if we don't have a court order, Richard," Frank warned sternly. "You could lose your law license. You could go to prison."

Richard picked up the framed photo of Arthur Whitmore, looking into his late friend’s eyes.

"Arthur gave his life to build a future for that little girl," Richard said softly. "I don't care about my license, Frank. I care about bringing Arthur’s daughter home."
