Chapter 5 - The Silent Bond

A month later, the autumn air in Central Park was crisp and cool.

The leaves had turned to brilliant shades of gold and amber, falling softly onto the paved pathways.

I sat on a wooden bench, wrapped in a warm cashmere coat. A few feet away, Leah was running through the grass, laughing as she chased a golden retriever puppy that Ricardo had bought for her.

She was no longer the silent, hollow-eyed girl from Il Verano. Her cheeks were pink with health, and her laughter was the most beautiful music I had ever heard.

"She’s getting fast," a deep voice said.

I looked up to see Ricardo standing beside the bench. He was dressed in a casual black coat, his hands shoved into his pockets. The hard, untouchable mafia boss looked remarkably relaxed, his eyes watching Leah with a genuine, paternal warmth.

"She takes after her mother," I smiled, sliding over to give him room to sit.

Ricardo sat down, looking out over the park. "Your father’s transfer of your trust fund was completed this morning. You are officially one of the wealthiest women in New York, Clara. You can go anywhere. You can buy a house in Europe, take Leah, and never look back."

I looked at him. A month ago, I would have taken the money and run as far away from the Moretti name as possible. But over the last few weeks, I had seen a different side of Ricardo. I had seen the man who stayed up with Leah when she had nightmares, the man who had protected us when the world was falling apart.

"We like New York," I said softly, looking back at Leah as she tripped over her own feet, giggling as the puppy licked her face.

Leah looked up, saw us sitting together, and waved.

“Mama! Papa! Look!” she called out, her voice clear and bright.

My heart swelled. I looked at Ricardo, and for the first time, I saw a genuine, brilliant smile break across his face. He reached out, his warm, scarred hand gently covering mine on the cold wooden bench.

May you like

"Then you stay," Ricardo whispered, his grip tightening around my fingers. "Both of you. Under my protection. Always."

I smiled, squeezing his hand back as we watched our daughter play in the golden autumn light, knowing that the silence was finally gone, and we were finally home.
