Chapter 3 - The Safe Haven

The Moretti estate in Westchester was a fortress. High stone walls, iron gates, and armed guards patrolling the perimeter.
But inside, the house was warm, smelling of pine and expensive wood polish. Ricardo led us upstairs to a massive, sunlit nursery filled with books, toys, and a beautiful canopy bed.
"She has everything she could ever want," Ricardo said, standing by the doorway as I gently laid Leah on the bed.
She was exhausted. Her small eyes fluttered open, panic rising in them the moment I tried to step back.
“Mama,” she whimpered, reaching out.
"I'm here, baby," I whispered, climbing onto the bed beside her and pulling her into my arms. "I'm not going anywhere. I promise."
Within minutes, her breathing evened out, and she fell into a deep, peaceful sleep—the first real sleep she had probably had in two years.
Ricardo walked into the room, carrying a tray with a hot bowl of soup, a glass of water, and a thick stack of legal documents. He set them quietly on the nightstand.
"Eat," he said. "You look like you haven't had a proper meal in months."
"I was living on tips and stale bread, Mr. Moretti," I said, my voice dry. "I didn't have much of a choice."
He sat in the armchair across from the bed, his dark eyes analyzing my worn face, the cheap fabric of my server uniform, and the dark circles under my eyes.
"Your father cut you off," he stated.
"He told me if I stayed in New York, he would make sure I never found a job," I said, a bitter laugh escaping my throat. "He wanted me gone. But I couldn't leave. I didn't know why, but a part of me felt like I had to stay here. Like something was pulling me back."
"It was her," Ricardo said, looking at Leah. "The blood knows, Clara."
He tapped the legal documents on the nightstand. "These are the adoption papers. They are forged, but they carry the signature of a judge who is currently on my payroll. Your father thinks he is untouchable because he is about to win the senate seat. He thinks the Moretti family is his shield."

"What are you going to do?" I asked, my heart hammering.
"I am going to destroy him," Ricardo said, his voice incredibly calm. "But first, I am going to make him give you back your life."
