Chapter 6 - A Father's Choice
The legal battle did not end that day, but the war was won.
With Catherine’s secret will admitted into evidence, the federal court immediately granted sole temporary custody of Lily to Robert Mitchell. The document, combined with the altered toxicology reports and the forensic accounting files Marcus presented, triggered a massive federal investigation into the Harrison Group.
Within forty-eight hours, William Harrison and three of his top executives were arrested by federal agents on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, grand larceny, and corporate fraud. The $3 billion merger collapsed, and the entirety of the Harrison Trust was frozen, placed under the management of an independent, court-appointed trustee until Lily reached the age of eighteen.
But in the quiet penthouse on Fifth Avenue, none of that mattered.
Six months had passed since the trial. The spring sun was warming the city, and the glass walls of Robert’s apartment were filled with light. The cold, sterile silence that had once defined his life was gone, replaced by the sounds of laughter, the clatter of toys, and the occasional spilled glass of juice.
Robert sat at the dining table, a cup of coffee in hand, watching Lily. She was wearing a bright yellow dress, her blonde hair tied up in neat pigtails. She was sitting at the table, diligently coloring a new picture.
Mrs. Gable walked in, carrying a tray of fresh cookies. "She's getting tall, Mr. Mitchell," she whispered, smiling. "And she hasn't taken a single photo frame in months."
"She doesn't need to steal them anymore," Robert said softly. "She knows they're not going anywhere."
Lily finished her drawing and ran over to Robert, sliding into his lap and presenting the paper with pride.
It was a drawing of three people. A woman with blonde hair looking down from a cloud with a smile. And below her, a tall man and a little girl, holding hands in front of a big, bright house. At the bottom, in neat, childish handwriting, she had written:
The Mitchell Family.
"It's perfect, Lily," Robert said, wrapping his arms around her and holding her tight.
He had spent his entire life building a financial empire, calculating every risk, and avoiding any investment that couldn't be quantified. But as he looked at the little girl who had saved him from his own loneliness, he realized that the best decision he had ever made was the one that made absolutely no business sense.
