Chapter 5 - The Battle of Richmond

The Richmond County Courthouse was a fortress of limestone and historical authority. On the morning of the hearing, the steps were swarming with reporters, photographers, and security guards. The news of the "Billionaire Custody Battle" had leaked to the press, sparked by a strategic release of information from Marcus’s team.
The headline had captured the public’s imagination: The Runaway Heiress: Is the $3 Billion Harrison Fortune Hiding a Dark Secret?
Robert walked up the steps, his hand gripped tightly around Lily’s. He wore his finest suit, his expression a mask of absolute calm. Beside him walked Marcus, carrying a briefcase loaded with the financial records and the altered medical reports.
As they entered the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Sitting at the defense table was William Harrison. At seventy-one, he was a imposing figure with silver hair, cold grey eyes, and a tailored suit that whispered power. He didn't look like a grandfather; he looked like a king defending his throne. Behind him sat a army of six high-priced corporate lawyers.
William’s eyes locked onto Lily, a flicker of something dark and dangerous crossing his features. Lily flinched and stepped closer to Robert, who immediately placed a protective hand on her shoulder.
"Mr. Mitchell," Judge Evelyn Vance, a stern woman with a reputation for no-nonsense justice, said as she took her seat. "This is an emergency hearing regarding the temporary custody of the minor child known as Lily. The Harrison Group has filed a petition claiming the child is Catherine Harrison’s daughter and must be returned to her legal guardian and grandfather, William Harrison."
William’s lead attorney stood up, his voice smooth and projecting confidence.
"Your Honor, the situation is clear. This child is the biological granddaughter of my client. Robert Mitchell has no legal relationship to her. He is a stranger who took her from a foster home under false pretenses. We demand the immediate return of the child to her family."
Marcus stood up next. "Your Honor, we do not dispute that Lily is Catherine Harrison’s daughter. In fact, we welcome the confirmation. But we vehemently dispute that William Harrison is a fit guardian. We have evidence to suggest that Catherine Harrison was murdered to cover up a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme within the Harrison Trust—a trust that now belongs entirely to Lily."
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. The reporters began scribbling furiously.
William Harrison’s face turned a dangerous shade of red. He stood up, ignoring his lawyer’s hand on his arm.
"This is absurd!" William roared, his voice booming through the courtroom. "This man is a speculator, a corporate raider trying to hijack my family's legacy using a child he stole from the streets! I am her grandfather! The Harrison blood runs in her veins!"
"Does it?" Robert’s voice was quiet, but it cut through the shouting like a scalpel. He stood up, looking directly at William. "If you care so much about blood, Mr. Harrison, why did you spend the last three years pretending she didn't exist? Why did you leave her in a foster system while you tried to dismantle her mother’s trust?"
"Silence!" Judge Vance banged her gavel. "Mr. Mitchell, you do not have standing to cross-examine Mr. Harrison. And unless you can prove your legal connection to this child, I am legally obligated to return her to her biological family."
Robert felt the ground shifting beneath him. The law was a rigid, unyielding thing, and despite the evidence of financial fraud, without a legal bond, he was just a stranger in the eyes of the court.
The judge looked down at Lily, her expression softening slightly. "Child, step forward to the witness stand."
Lily looked at Robert. He nodded, giving her a reassuring squeeze. "Be brave, Lily. Just tell the truth."
She walked slowly up to the witness stand, her small frame dwarfed by the massive wooden structure. The courtroom went entirely silent.
"Lily," Judge Vance said gently. "Do you know who these people are?"
Lily looked at William Harrison. Her voice did not shake.
"That man is William Harrison," she said, her voice clear and resonant. "He is my grandfather by blood. But he was never my family. My mommy told me he was the one we had to run from."
William’s lawyers objected loudly, but the judge waved them down.
"And who is Robert Mitchell to you?" the judge asked.
Lily turned her eyes to Robert. A brilliant, tearful smile broke across her face.
"Robert Mitchell is my father by choice," she said. "He didn't know who I was. He didn't know about the money. He just saw a little girl who was scared and cold, and he took me home. He slept on the floor outside my room when I had nightmares. He told me I wasn't bad luck. He is my dad."
She then turned back to the judge, reaching into her small pocket and pulling out a worn, laminated card.
"And my mommy told me that if I ever found the Mitchell family, I should show them this."
She handed the card to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge.
It was Catherine Harrison’s personal will, written and notarized in secret three years ago, before her death.
Judge Vance read the document, her eyes widening in shock. She looked up, first at William Harrison, then at Robert.

"This document," Judge Vance said, her voice shaking slightly, "is a legally binding declaration of guardianship. Catherine Harrison appointed Thomas Mitchell, or his surviving legal heirs, as the sole guardian of her daughter in the event of her death. Robert Mitchell is the sole surviving heir of Thomas Mitchell."
The courtroom erupted into chaos.
