Chapter 2 - The Mother’s Poison

By the next afternoon, the DNA samples had been submitted to a private, high-priority lab, with results guaranteed within forty-eight hours. The atmosphere inside the Whitmore estate had shifted from a quiet mansion to an active war zone.
Grant had strictly ordered that Elena be moved out of the staff quarters above the garage and into the grandest guest suite in the East Wing. He had canceled all his corporate meetings, choosing instead to sit with Elena, desperately trying to make up for nearly three decades of lost time.
But Catherine was not a woman to go down without a fight.
That evening, while Grant was away at a mandatory emergency board meeting, Catherine intercepted Elena in the long, portrait-lined gallery. Standing beside Catherine were her two eldest children, Mason and Claire. Mason looked at Elena with a mixture of confusion and corporate hostility, while Claire looked deeply uncomfortable.
"Look at you," Catherine whispered, her voice dripping with venom as she stepped into Elena's path. "Sitting in our dining room, sleeping in our sheets. You think because you share a drop of blood with Grant, you suddenly belong here? You are a stray, Elena. A bastard born from a woman who wasn't good enough for this family, and you never will be either."
"Mother, please, let's just wait for the test results," Claire muttered, looking away, unable to meet Elena’s eyes.
"No, Claire!" Mason snapped, stepping forward aggressively. "She’s been scheming for nine years! Think about it. She played the devoted servant, waiting until Dad was vulnerable to pull this stunt. If she takes a quarter of the shares, the company’s valuation will plummet. Our trust funds will be cut in half!"
Elena stood her ground, her posture straight. The years of servitude had taught her patience, but they had also given her an unbreakable spine.
"I didn't ask for this, Mason," Elena said, her voice calm and steady. "I was leaving this house because your mother spent the last three months trying to frame me as a thief. She hid her own jewelry and porcelain birds just to make me look guilty. Didn't she?"
Mason blinked, looking at his mother in surprise. Catherine’s eyes widened slightly before she scoffed. "Don't lie to cover your tracks! You are a parasite. And I will make sure you leave this place with absolutely nothing."
"We'll see what the DNA test says," Elena replied smoothly, walking past them without looking back.
But Catherine’s cruelty ran deeper than Elena anticipated. Later that night, as Elena lay awake in her new bedroom, she heard the door handle click. The door opened slowly, revealing Noah, the youngest sibling—the thirteen-year-old boy Elena had nursed through pneumonia years ago, now a brooding nineteen-year-old college student.
Noah didn't look angry; he looked absolutely devastated.
"Elena..." Noah whispered, standing by the edge of the bed. "Is it true? Are you really my sister?"
Elena sat up, her heart softening. Out of all the Whitmores, Noah was the only one who had never treated her like staff. "We have to wait for the test, Noah. But... I think it's true. Your father loved my mother very much."

Tears welled in Noah’s eyes. "My mother... she told me this afternoon that if you stay, you're going to destroy our family. She told me you hate us and want to take everything away. But you took care of me when I was sick. You drove through an ice storm for Claire. Why would she say those things about you?"
Elena reached out, gently placing a hand over Noah's. "Because your mother is afraid of the truth, Noah. She’s afraid that love and decency matter more than money."
